Q&A with GCL Yankees Manager Tommy Slater

We sat down with GCL Yankees Manager Tommy Slater for a Q&A session to get his thoughts on what kind of progress he saw from Kelvin De Leon, why he thinks Jose Ramirez flies under the radar, what are his early impressions of Slade Heathcott and J.R. Murphy, what he saw from Eduardo Sosa, and much, much more.

PinstripesPlus.com: Obviously Kelvin De Leon was your big slugger this year. You saw him from Spring Training through Extended Spring Training all the way through the Gulf Coast League and Instructs. Talk about the development you saw from him from start to finish this year.

Tommy Slater: I first saw Kelvin last year at Instructional League and the progress he's made since then has just been tremendous. He's greatly improved on defense. His routes in the outfield are much better. He's got a good arm and he's controlling that arm now. He's not just throwing wildly, he's throwing to the right bases with good, low cuttable throws that carry through to their intended targets. I think you saw him throw a guy out at the plate in one of our Instructional League games. He's just made great progress in the outfield. Offensively I think he's come a long way as well. He hit for a solid average with good power numbers this year in the GCL. I think the key for Kelvin, when he's using the whole field and we talk about it quite a bit, when he's hitting balls to right-center and centerfield that usually leads to a pretty good overall game for him. He's just made great strides in every phase of the game in the last year.

PinstripesPlus.com: He hasn't always been the greatest hustler out on the field but he seems to have really turned that up a notch, especially at Instructs. Have you noticed that as well?

Slater: Yeah, I think he's grown up a lot. I really do. I think he realizes that there's a lot more to the game than just hitting the ball over the fence. I thought he grew a lot this Spring and all through the GCL season. I think Kelvin understands the importance of backing up bases when he's playing right field, being in the right spot, as well as getting out of the box hard. I think you saw that triple he hit [at Instructs] and he got that triple because he got out of the box hard from the get-go. When the ball kicked off of the fence away from the left fielder it allowed him to get a triple instead of just a double. That's a credit to him. He's really playing the game the right way.

PinstripesPlus.com: A guy who didn't have a good year is Eduardo Sosa, but yet he seems to have all the talent in the world. In your opinion what went wrong with him this year?

Slater: I wouldn't say that he didn't have a good year. I don't think that's fair to him. First of all, he played centerfield as well you can play centerfield. The day we threw the no-hitter where Turley and Barreda combined for the no-hitter, Eduardo Sosa made one of the finest catches I've ever seen in centerfield during that no-hitter. He is really a good outfielder. And like a lot of young players - I believe this was his first year in the United States - he had some really good games and he had some games where he didn't play as well. I think with a young player it's learning to understand that using the whole field is important, taking his base hits to left and left-center when they're provided to him, not being too pull-conscious and not being too home run conscious. This is a dynamic player. This is a guy who can run well, he plays a tremendous centerfield, and has pop in his bat. But I think the biggest thing for 'Sos' is understanding that 'hey, I've got speed and I don't always have to try and hit the ball out of the park'. I think he's learning that and I think that's coming. He certainly was, even if the batting average didn't reflect that he had a great year, he was our catalyst. He was the guy at the top of our lineup that when he went off so did we. I love that kid. He uses high energy, he works his tail off, and I think he's got a bright future.

PinstripesPlus.com: A guy who seems to get overlooked, probably because he was a later round draft pick out of college, is Kevin Mahoney. He always played a helluva third base when I saw him. What do you think of him?

Slater: I don't think you can play a better third base. Jody Reed and I've talked about it a lot, as far as third base play goes there's no way you can play it better than he played it for us. I think if you talked to our pitching staff they would tell you he saved a lot of runs this year just with his play at third base alone. He made great plays to his right, great plays to his left, every slow-roller play that could be made, etc. I think he's a premium defender at third and he's strong at the point of contact too. You look at his doubles and you look at his home runs - when this kid makes contact he drives the ball. I think as he starts to understand his swing a little bit better with wood and makes the transition from the aluminum bat, and understands some things better at the plate, I think this kid has a chance. I really do because when he makes contact he's strong at the point of contact and he's a premium, premium defender.

PinstripesPlus.com: I know you didn't get to see much of him in the GCL, but you did get to see more of him at Instructs. What are your early impressions of Slade Heathcott?

Slater: We had him and 'Murph' for the last two weeks of the GCL but Murphy got to play a little more because Slade got nicked up a little bit, but he's a very intense competitor. I think the kid's got a really bright future. He's got a lot of tools and he's a worker. I mean he's a really good worker. He wants to be great and he has a lot of ability. I think usually when you combine those two things, great desire and work ethic along with great ability, that usually bodes well for guys. He's got great intensity, he's strong, he gets good jumps in the outfield, he has a really good throwing arm, and combine that with some ability to drive the ball at the plate I think he's got the chance to be really special.

PinstripesPlus.com: Well you mentioned J.R. Murphy so what can you tell us about him?

Slater: He actually got to play everyday for us after he signed. He dropped right into our lineup and played everyday for two weeks there down the stretch and in the playoffs. He has a very advanced hitting approach, lots of backspin line-drives to right-centerfield, he drove some doubles into the right-centerfield gap, just an advanced hitting approach for a kid his age. And just mature, a very mature player. He caught that no-hitter. His second start as a pro and he catches the Turley-Barreda combined no-hitter. I think that tells you about his intelligence as a player as well.

PinstripesPlus.com: Jose Mojica put up some very solid numbers for it being both his first year of pro ball and his first year coming back from the torn ACL injury. What did you think of his game this year?

Slater: I agree with you 100 percent. For a kid coming off of an ACL injury - 'Moji' has great hands, both at shortstop and at the plate. He can make the plays. He's got great hands in the field, he's got a real good throwing arm, and same thing at the plate...he's got great hands. He makes barrel adjustments and I think for the guys who played extensively he led our team in hitting. I think the biggest thing for him moving forward is to get all of his strength and speed back as you come back from that knee injury. After missing the full year [last season] and then going through the Spring Training, Extended Spring Training, and the GCL, he looked really fresh, really strong, and springier to me at Instructional League than he did in August. I think as he continues to work in the weight room and gets his strength and speed back that he had before the injury, that'll be the biggest thing because the hands are already there.

PinstripesPlus.com: You mentioned that Eduardo Sosa was better than his numbers indicated. Can you say the same thing about Ramon Flores, especially being as young as he was?

Slater: Yeah, he's a 17-year old kid whose got loads of skills, loads of ability. I really like him too. He's a real solid outfielder, he has a really good arm, a very accurate arm. It's not only a strong arm from the outfield but it's very accurate. He's a really good thrower. We played him everyday and I don't know how many 17-year olds play everyday in the GCL - he's one of the few - and August was one of his best months. The more he played the more he got comfortable and the better he got. He really swung the bat well in August and he was coming into his own there a little bit. I think for it being his first year, being 17 years old - and he was tearing it up in the Dominican from what I understand - I think he has a lot of ability in a lot of different areas, just like Sosa. I think he does a lot of things well.

PinstripesPlus.com: Francisco Arcia had some decent numbers this year, but he kind of reminds me of Melky Cabrera at the big league level a little bit as a guy who just seems to be in the mix a lot. Do you see that?

Slater: I'll tell you, 'Arcy' and [Jose] Tuossen, they were the two leaders of our team. The thing with 'Arcy' is that he is a very, very smart and intelligent player. He's a really good catcher. He works really well with his pitchers, brings energy to the ballpark everyday, and he's a good hitter. We hit him in the five hole a lot and he always seemed to get the clutch hit when we needed it, and he was the leader of the team. He was a leader vocally with the Latin players and with the American players, he's bilingual, and he's a really intelligent kid. I love him and he's a really good player. He brings the best out of his teammates, he gets the most out of his pitching staff, and for a young kid he does a great job. He never takes a bad at-bat out with him to catch.

PinstripesPlus.com: You've got to help me here. Despite having all the great numbers and some great stuff to boot, Jose Ramirez seems to fly under the radar. Do you see why?

Slater: I'll put it to you this way - he doesn't fly under the radar with anybody who is paying attention. Every opposing manager in our division knows that he's a stud. Now why he doesn't get written up in different publications, who knows. Just look at his numbers and his stuff. We're talking about a guy 94-95 MPH with a great feel for a changeup, his breaking ball continues to get better, he pounds the strike zone, and at one point I think he threw 24 consecutive scoreless innings for us this summer. He's just got really, really good stuff. You talk to opposing managers before the game all of the time and they'd be like 'what's up with Ramirez? We hate facing that guy'. The opposing managers, he wasn't under the radar with them and he certainly wasn't with our club. We always felt good when he was on the mound.

PinstripesPlus.com: Nik Turley was a repeat guy this year. You saw him all year long. Did you see him make the kind of progress that you wanted to see from him?

Slater: Yeah you talk about that and his last outing was six innings of no-hit ball. His best outings were about his last three or four. I really thought there down the stretch in August that his delivery was repeatable, the angle on his pitches was better, and I really thought he made great progress from where he was in Extended [Spring Training] to even the early part of the GCL in June to where he was in August. Nik is a really intelligent, hard working kid. I thought he made great progress this summer.

PinstripesPlus.com: Mikey O'Brien was another repeat guy, but the numbers don't really bear it out that he made great progress. What did you see?

Slater: I think the deal with Mikey is that he got hurt during Extended and he missed the first half of the GCL. That kind of set him back early. When he got back to pitching for us in late July and into August, the velo went up for him from where it was when I saw him last year at this time. I just think for him having that setback didn't give him a full season like Nik had. The thing about Mikey is he's a really good competitor and every time out he's going to give you everything he's got.

PinstripesPlus.com: Matt Richardson, another repeat guy, wasn't there long but the numbers were unreal. Was he just too much for that league?

Slater: I don't know whether he had four starts or five, I don't remember exactly what it was, but he was in total command on the mound with the stuff he was throwing. He was throwing good stuff. The fastball was 88-91, the spin on his curveball was good, but it was the command that he had of all of his pitches and the mound presence he showed, his ability to command the running game, very early on he looked polished and worthy of going up to Staten Island. Just his poise and mound presence really stood out for me in the early part of the GCL season.

PinstripesPlus.com: Manny Barreda had really good numbers this season, but it was his stuff that was more impressive to me. What did you think of his stuff coming off of Tommy John surgery?

Slater: Honestly, I think Manny's stuff overmatched a lot of the GCL hitters. Because he was coming off of the Tommy John he was never allowed to throw more than two innings in an outing, but his stuff was too much for the GCL hitters. He threw his fastball where he wanted to, when he wanted to, by hitters. When he went to his slider off of that, most of these hitters were just overmatched by Manny. His stuff was so good I don't know how much he got tested here.

PinstripesPlus.com: Mariel Checo had some brutal numbers and he definitely walked a lot of guys, so we know command is an issue right now. But stuff-wise, what did you think?

Slater: I just think he's raw, really raw. He just needs to get on the mound, get innings, and get an opportunity to work on a lot of stuff. He's got a good arm, but he's just a raw kid. He's got a live arm, it's just a matter of learning. I know with Nardi and the pitching coaches they'll teach him how to harness his stuff. Nardi will start at phase one with him and turn him into a pitcher, because right now he's just a young kid with a great arm.

PinstripesPlus.com: Brett Gerritse on the other hand seemed to know what he was doing a little bit for a young guy out there. You agree?

Slater: Yeah, he can really spin the breaking ball well. I really like the spin on that breaking ball and he's got a little bit of a feel for what he's doing out there. Like most of these young kids, they've dominated the high school level and they've never pitched out of the stretch. They've almost pitched exclusively out of the windup. I think with Brett moving forward it's just going to be getting comfortable pitching out of the stretch. Once he's gets more comfortable with that, he'll move forward. He competes and he had some really good outings for us.

PinstripesPlus.com: Just focusing on Instructs, who stood out for you offensively at Instructs?

Slater: I thought Carmen Angelini had a really good Instructs. He really swung the bat well, he played shortstop well, and I thought he did a great job. He works hard too. It's always fun to be around Corban Joseph and Jose Pirela too because they're great young players, and I love watching them play. I really enjoyed watching Reymond Nunez play, that's the guy. I had never seen him play and I really, really liked watching him play because he's got thunder in his bat. I loved throwing BP to him everyday, I loved watching him play, and he can really drive a baseball. He really impressed me.

PinstripesPlus.com: Same question on the mound, who stood out for you among the pitchers at Instructs?

Slater: He pitched for me all season but I thought all Jose Ramirez did was go out and do what he did all summer. I thought he continued to pitch really well.

\r\nSlater: I thought Carmen Angelini had a really good Instructs.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Same question on the mound, who stood out for you among the pitchers at Instructs?
\r\n
\r\nSlater: He pitched for me all season but I thought all Jose Ramirez did was go out and do what he did all summer. I thought he continued to pitch really well.
