Beyond The Top 50 Prospects

We had over 80 players considered for our Top 50 Yankee Prospects rankings. For those who barely missed the "Top 50", they have not been forgotten. As we take a look at the near misses we'll analyze how close they came, where they might rank next season and why they missed the list altogether. Now, let's look "Beyond the Top 50."

SS, Carmen Angelini: Angelini is a Top 50 type talent who has yet to prove it in his first two professional seasons. He hit just a combined .193 between Charleston and Staten Island, and he's also had some defensive issues. With makeup off the charts, he is a better player than he's shown thus far but he's going to have to prove it soon to keep getting his opportunities.

C, Francisco Arcia: Normally switch-hitting catchers with an advanced hitting approach, plus defensive skills, and natural leadership abilities are instant Top 50 prospects. And Arcia didn't miss the mark by much. He also has a knack for coming up with the big hit too, but physically he could afford to get a little stronger. Should that happen he could start making a real big name for himself in the coming years. He's one to watch.

RHP, Brandon Braboy: The numbers were solid in 2009, going 4-5 with a 3.97 ERA as mostly a reliever for the Charleston Riverdogs. The solid but unspectacular numbers and the fact he was drafted in the 18th round back in 2008 help disguise the fact that he's one of the better 'sleepers' in the organization. He has a plus fastball-plus changeup combination and both his mechanics and slider are coming around. Watch out for him.

OF, Daniel Brewer: There's nothing wrong with Brewer's game as evidenced by his .306, 25 doubles, 6 home runs, 22 stolen base season between low-A Charleston and high-A Tampa. He doesn't have one plus tool, however, but his great makeup and all-out hustle will give him many opportunities.

LHP, Gavin Brooks: Last year's ninth round pick was one of the final cuts from our Top 50. The left-handed reliever has an above average fastball and a plus curveball, more than enough to move quickly through the organization as a reliever. The Yankees are working with him to add a two-seamer and a changeup to give him more options should his plus breaking pitch evade him some nights.

RHP, Noel Castillo: The 26-year old Dominican right-hander has one of the more explosive fastballs in the farm system. He can get it up to 98 MPH and he has a plus changeup to boot. However, his slider, while getting better, still isn't a consistent weapon for him yet. If he could get that down he'll have a big league future.

RHP, Mariel Checo: Don't let the fact that he was chosen in the 41st round last year fool you - this kid has a great arm. He can hit the low-90's consistently and he has the makings of a potential plus big league curveball, but the mechanics are raw right now. He's got a lot of work to do but he's got the raw talent to sit high in the Top 50 rankings someday.

LHP, Evan DeLuca: Like Checo, DeLuca was drafted late [the 44th round] but he's got a lot of upside to him. He too can sit in the low-90's with his fastball, he also has the makings of a potentially plus curveball, and the foundation is there for a good changeup. The Yankees are going to work on his mechanics and arm slot, particularly raising his arm slot some, and once he irons those out and improves his command a bit he could really rise up the rankings.

RHP, Grant Duff: The 6-foot-6 hurler put himself squarely on the prospect map this season when speeding up his tempo and forgetting mechanics led to a resurgent fastball, so much so it topped out at 99 MPH. He has both a slider and a splitter working, both of which can be strikeout pitches as well. Duff is on the cusp of being a viable impact reliever at the big league level for the Yankees. It will just depend on whether or not the Yankees choose to put him on the 40-man roster this offseason.

LHP, Sam Elam: A combined 0-2 record, 12.38 ERA, and 21 walks in just eight innings between the GCL Yankees and Staten Island Yankees were brutal numbers, but they don't do his stuff any justice. He's got a plus fastball that can sit the mid-90's, he's armed with a plus curveball and a big league changeup too. Once he learns to throw more strikes and trust his stuff more, he could be a real find in the bullpen. He's raw, but the stuff is too good to ignore.

RHP, Ryan Flannery: It's not unusual for pitchers to put up terrific numbers in the New York Penn League, but it is a bit odd when those pitchers don't have breaking pitches. Flannery, who posted a 1.45 ERA in 34 relief appearances, did it on the strength of a fastball that tops out at 97 MPH. The Yankees are trying to give him a splitter because the developing of a breaking ball has been slowing going and he's going to need another pitch to have any remote chance of the same kind of success at the higher levels.

RHP, Brett Gerritse: Drafted in the 12th round back in June, Gerritse is another high-ceiling teenage pitcher for the Yankees. He already throws a big league fastball and the spin he gets on his curveball gives it plus potential. His unorthodox mechanics were totally scrapped during Instructs and he is also working on a changeup. He's a bit raw right now but there's a lot to like potential-wise.

RHP, Daniel Gil: Gil has seemingly been around forever and he has still yet to make it above the rookie level, thanks in large part to numerous injuries over the years, including Tommy John surgery two years ago. He is a solid pitcher, however, boasting three big league pitches already and showing good command. His lack of plus velocity might keep him buried on the depth chart for now, but his secondary pitches could keep him in the mix.

OF, Taylor Grote: Grote is kind of a left-handed hitting version of Brewer in that he does a lot of things well but he doesn't have the one standout tool. He has a good approach at the plate but he struggled to hit .232 with the Charleston Riverdogs, and he's a versatile defensive outfielder who could play all three slots if need be. His progress is slow and steady at this point.

RHP, Craig Heyer: The right-hander has steadily put up numbers over his career thus far, showing decent secondary pitches and just an average fastball. However, his velocity picked up to top out at 93 MPH in Tampa this past season and that's enough power to make him a bit more intriguing as a potential reliever, especially with his sinker and plus command.

RHP, Alan Horne: Once a bonafide top ten prospect in the organization, Horne had shoulder surgery over a year ago and he has struggled to find his stuff ever since. He used to be a four-pitch hurler with plus velocity but he's been in rehab mode for a while now and the velocity hasn't come back yet. He is still one to watch though.

LHP, Zach Kroenke: A 7-1 mark and a 1.99 ERA at the Triple-A level is no joke. Kroenke has a plus slider that makes him devastating to left-handed batters and he has developed a forkball instead of a changeup that helps him against right-handed batters. But his fastball velocity is just average and that buries him behind the likes of Marte, Coke, Dunn, and even De La Rosa on the depth chart of left-handed relievers.

OF, Austin Krum: As intense as they come, the kind of player that would run through a wall to make a play, Krum is one of the more intriguing prospects not in the Top 50. He does everything pretty well. He can hit for some gap power, he's got some speed, and he can draw some walks [71 last year]. And with his defensive versatility, he's got a big league future as a reserve outfielder someday.

OF, Ray Kruml: Kruml's small-ball skills and blazing speed should give him residence in the Top 50 rankings, but his inconsistencies are holding him back. He hit just .246 with the Charleston Riverdogs last year and his walk-to-strikeout ratio [26:100] are not what you want to see from a leadoff type. If he could take more walks and boost up the average, he's got the plus speed and plus defensive abilities to make some noise.

LHP, Trenton Lare: The Independent League signing is very intriguing. He entered the system with a below average fastball and a plus changeup, but he ended the season picking up some velocity, showing some sink too, and developing his slurvy breaking ball into a legitimate slider. He's got too many arms to beat out in a starting capacity but he could find some success as a reliever.

3B, Robert Lyerly: Last year's sixth round pick is known for his bat. He's built well physically and he shows intriguing power potential too. He missed most of his debut season, however, after requiring surgery for a sports hernia. He'll be one to keep an eye next year.

OF, Deangelo Mack: There's no denying last year's 13th round pick had a fantastic professional debut season after he hit .307 with seven home runs for the Staten Island Yankees. His lack of speed relegates him to the corner outfield spots, however, and at 5-foot-10 there are some questions as to whether or not he can continue to show the same power at the higher levels. Not very toolsy, he's going to have to hit his way up through the minor leagues.

3B, Kevin Mahoney: Seldom do 23rd round picks as a college senior ever get a shred of consideration for the Top 50, but Mahoney's plus-plus defensive abilites and intriguing power potential make him a unique case. Should he get moved to second base and show the same kind of defensive ability, with his power, he could become a 'sleeper' prospect.

SS, Jose Mojica: Missing his debut season a year ago with an ACL injury, Mojica finally returned in 2009 to have a solid first year by hitting .278 for the Gulf Coast League Yankees. He has added nearly 30 pounds to his once slender frame and that has helped him generate a little more power, but the converse effect has him less rangy too. Like Mack, he's going to have hit his way up since the lack of speed will limit him and that's not necessarily good news for a middle infielder.

RHP, Mikey O'Brien: A broken finger interrupted what was shaping up to be a great development season. He had the curveball and fastball in place, and the changeup and mechanics were vastly improved by season's end. As is the case with most young pitchers, he often times tries to be too fine with his command and once he learns to trust his stuff more his game could start to take off.

RHP, Lance Pendleton: Pendleton had a terrific year in his second year back from Tommy John surgery, going a combined 12-8 with with a 3.14 ERA between high-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton. He's got three big league pitches in his fastball, curveball, and changeup, and he's also added a slider recently. He's got command too. Only the lack of a true plus fastball keeps him behind other harder throwers on the depth chart but he's definitely a big league candidate someday.

RHP, Ryan Pope: The numbers in Trenton weren't good, going just 5-12 with a 4.78 ERA in his first taste of Double-A. He made some adjustments towards the end of the season though, posting a 3.27 ERA over his final seven starts, thanks in large part to speeding up his tempo a bit and seeing a slight increase in his velocity. He's now a four-pitch hurler after mixing in a slider but the hope still remains that he'll finally show the consistent 90-93 MPH velocity he once reportedly had in college.

RHP, Matt Richardson: It was a tale of two seasons for the young right-hander, dominating in the Gulf Coast League and getting hit pretty hard in Staten Island. His curveball has turned into a legitimate strikeout pitch but the development of his changeup has been slow-going thus far. Once he gets that down, with his stellar command potential, he could really start making some noise.

LHP, Francisco Rondon: Sleeper alert! Rondon just barely missed out on our Top 50 prospects because his power fastball-plus, plus slider combination gives him a very high ceiling, especially as a potential left-handed reliever. In a lot of ways he's a much, much younger version of Wilkins Arias. Like Arias, the key for his development will be improved command, but the big league arm and stuff are already in place.

RHP, Romulo Sanchez: The former Pittsburgh Pirates hurler had a solid year in Triple-A, thanks in large part by his ability to hit 100 MPH with his fastball. On velocity alone he's a Top 50 prospect, but his changeup and slider are two decent pitches that he doesn't go to often enough. He's more of a hard-throwing reliever whose lagging breaking pitch might limit his usefulness in a big league bullpen. His secondary pitches need work, but the power is surely there.

LHP, Nik Turley: The 6-foot-6 hurler seemingly had come a long way in a short period of time a year ago during Instructs, but kind of took a step backwards in Spring Training. His biggest problem has been consistency, consistency with his mechanics, curveball, and changeup. All three can be plus on any given day and that's best exemplified by pitching part of the no-hitter in the Gulf Coast League this year. He's still a little raw but the potential is big.

LHP/RHP, Pat Venditte: The switch-pitcher is known more for his ambidextrous abilities and phenomenal minor league numbers than his actual stuff. He doesn't throw hard at all, especially from the left side, but he does generate some wicked movement with his breaking pitches. His above average curveball from the right side and average velocity, along with his pinpoint command and bulldog attitude, serves him well. He'll continue to be the kind of guy, however, that will need to keep proving his overall game is better than his stuff.
