Q&A with Jody Reed

We sat down with Yankees minor league defensive infield coordinator Jody Reed for a Q&A session to get his thoughts on whether or not he believes Kevin Russo can handle shortstop in a utility role, if he believes Corban Joseph can stick at second base, if Eduardo Nunez has become a more consistent defender, if he sees Brandon Laird more as a third baseman or a first baseman, and much, much more.

PinstripesPlus.com: What kind of versatility can Reegie Corona bring to the Yankees? What do you like best about him at all three spots?

Jody Reed: He's an athlete. He's extremely athletic. Just like you said, his versatility. You can put him anywhere and you're probably not going to feel a drop in the defensive performance. You're probably going to see a rise in it. The one thing we tried to do near the end of the season was give him a little more shortstop time so he could get accustomed to that throw. I guess if I were to say there was any deficiency it would be a real minor one and that's only because he hasn't gotten the playing time over there yet, and we tried to give him some of that over there. And once he got over there and got some playing time he did fine.

PinstripesPlus.com: I've always made the contention that in the American League your utility players have to be able to play shortstop. Now I know Kevin Russo can play the heck out of second base, but do you think at shortstop he could handle the position defensively for a week or two if called upon?

Reed: Without a doubt, I have no concerns whatsoever. Kevin's a guy where when you see him play everyday you appreciate what he does. If you see him play once or twice, it doesn't really rev up your engines if you will. I know a lot of people like that. You're talking to one of them. He's a grinder. He's a blue-collar guy and knows how to win ball games. You see that and you appreciate that over a period of time.

PinstripesPlus.com: Well I'm going to ask about a guy a lot more flashy then in the form of Eduardo Nunez. Everybody by now knows the kid has crazy range and a bazooka for an arm. We know he can make the stupendous play but ironically he has trouble with the routine ones sometimes, even making 33 errors this past season. Have you seen him become more consistent defender?

Reed: Oh without a doubt. Eduardo has done a lot of growing up in the last year and a half to two years. He may be on the verge of figuring this out. Now he made 33 errors, but this is coming from a guy with experience - he made 10 or 12 right out of the gate and in my opinion, and again, I've been there having grown up in Florida and having to experience a New Britain, Connecticut April and May - it shocks the system. I'm not one to make excuses for anybody. As a matter of fact I don't even offer them. I'm just sharing an experience that I had that it's difficult to play in that kind of an environment, in that kind temperature - we're talking 30 something degrees - it's difficult. He had to battle through it for the first time. Now he knows what to expect and knows how to adjust to it a little better. You don't completely get over it. You take those out of there and he's in the low-20's [errors-wise], which isn't bad for a Double-A kid.

PinstripesPlus.com: Jorge Vazquez, while not ever going to be confused with a Gold Glover, seems a little nimble for a bigger guy. Were you impressed with his defensive work or is there a lot more work to do?

Reed: Georgey is getting used to playing over here. What I mean by that is, I don't think he really understood the intensity and value that we put on defense over here, example [Mark] Teixeira, and the benefit it can have on his infield and on his team. When he first came over he didn't understand that and the impact he could have. He's realizing that. And like you said, he is a nimble guy, believe it or not. And he's got great hands. He's starting to learn how to tempo his feet and use his body. Believe it or not he's very athletic.

PinstripesPlus.com: One of my favorites now is David Adams. He was, in my opinion, a pretty big question mark defensively and he seems to have done a complete 180 degree turnaround. How much do you like the progress he's shown at second base?

Reed: Well you just answered that right there. You're exactly right in what you've seen, he's basically done a 180. David is a very intelligent baseball player. Actually he's a very intelligent young man. It didn't take much discussion for him to buy into the value of defense at that position and he committed to it, and he committed to paying close attention in detail to every bit of information he got, and not only that but here's the biggest difference - being able to apply that into game situations, which he can almost do instantaneously. The ability to do that has sped up his progress. Like you said, he's done a 180 degree turn.

PinstripesPlus.com: Brandon Laird shed off a lot of weight and there was a noticeable difference in his range. He's been playing first and third, but where do you see him fitting in mostly long-term? Is he more of a third baseman or a first baseman in your mind?

Reed: Certainly we'd like to keep him at third. I think he's showing that he could possibly stay there because of the progress he's made. He had a heck of an Arizona Fall League from what I understand. He just needs to keep working like he is. He made big strides this past season and the kid can hit. This kid is going to hit. He can just flat-out hit. If he can keep progressing on the defensive side of the ball and progressing mentally, he's got a shot.

PinstripesPlus.com: If there's one thing you can put your finger on as an area where he needs to get better, what would it be?

Reed: This is extremely hard to develop, to develop the mental toughness to stay committed to that side of the ball for every pitch of every day. When you bring that to his attention and he's aware of it, boom, he plays lights out. If you don't create that awareness and a couple of days roll along, he has a tendency to not keep that intensity. He needs to keep that intensity as all big leaguers do, that's why they're in the big leagues. They've developed that ability to do that and they know that any pitch can be hit and be the difference in a ball game. I think if he can develop that type of mental toughness, he's got a chance to play in the big leagues.

PinstripesPlus.com: I know he played the second-half of the year in centerfield, but Damon Sublett was a second baseman for a while. Why was he moved to center and is turning the double-play the biggest shortcoming at second base for him?

Reed: For Subby, I think the decision was made to move him out there because there was a little rigidness at second base, a little stiffness, and we wanted to see how he looked out in centerfield. Ultimately our goal is to give our guys the best possible chance that we feel will get them to the big leagues. That's their goal, that's our goal. We really are working for our guys and we use all of our knowledge to best help their dream come true. And we felt maybe we should take a look at Damon in the outfield. I don't think he had a problem with it, and quite honestly for being thrust out there in the middle of the season, I thought he played pretty well.

PinstripesPlus.com: Of the guys on the Charleston team, the guy I love is Jose Pirela. Now he seems to play an okay shortstop, but for me he has the look of a potentially great defensive second baseman. Do you agree?

Reed: I think everybody would agree with that based on his skillset. I think so, I think everyone would agree. Second base would probably be his best position, but he is demonstrating an ability to play short and we are obviously trying to see if he can stay there. He's still young and he's learning the tempo. He's gotten much better at learning the speed of the game from the shortstop side of the field. This guy is gamer. He's a ballplayer and he loves the game. When you get a guy with that kind of intensity, that moxie on the field, boy, that just screams shortstop to you. You want a guy like that, a guy who is fearless and who will lead, not just his infield, but who will lead his whole team. Jose has demonstrated the personality and the ability to do that. If he keeps working on developing some arm strength, I really think he has a future at shortstop.

PinstripesPlus.com: Corban Joseph seemed to be pretty good at third base this year, but specifically at second base I'd like to know if you think he can stay there long-term.

Reed: I do. This guy can hit. He's got a great bat. A bat always plays a little bit better at second base than it does at third, and again, he's a young guy. He needs to control that body a little bit, especially making some perimeter plays, some extended plays. But we're working on that and he had a great Instructional League. We're talking about a kid who is 20 years old. He hasn't even developed his mature body yet. He is still growing into it athletically and from a maturity standpoint. Let's see what happens over the course of the next year or two.

PinstripesPlus.com: Garrison Lassiter went from being a high school shortstop to a professional third baseman pretty quickly. Do you like the early signs of his play over at third?

Reed: I like the development that Garrison has shown from day one to where he's at right now. He's got a long way to go though because we're talking about a high school kid and pretty much went right into a full-season scenario and that's real tough to do. It's very difficult to do. Quite honestly, this is true for athletes and heck this is true for all people, you learn from your mistakes. You learn from your failures and they make you better. We've spent a lot of time with him learning how to learn from your mistakes. Garrison and Angelini are the two guys I look forward to watching play next year to see what this past year did for them. I'm hoping, and I really think these two guys are going to show the most improvement of anybody because they had to learn to fight for something finally. They learned how to fight this year and you've got to do that as a baseball player. I'm anxious to see what that did to them from a mental toughness point of view and just playing the game day in and day out.

PinstripesPlus.com: You mentioned Carmen Angelini. Obviously the error totals have been quite high. Aside from learning how to fight for something, is there something else physically perhaps that's not working for him?

Reed: Let's look at Carmen's year. Yes, Carmen was doing some fundamental things wrong that were causing him to make a lot of mistakes. We addressed that. I think the first 30 ball games he made 18 errors or 19, something in that range. We brought him back down here and addressed the physicalness, and also his mentality and confidence level had dropped. We attacked that and shared our experiences in how to deal with that. If I'm not mistaken, in the next 50 or 60 games, he made nine errors. He went from making an error every 1.7 games to making an error every five games, roughly. Would we take that kind of progress? You bet. We'll take that. Again, 'Ang' and 'Las' are two guys I look forward to seeing what happens and how they respond this upcoming year.

PinstripesPlus.com: I realize Jimmy Paredes was shifted over to second base to help save his arm this year after coming back from labrum surgery, but he's extremely athletic. So even though he's quite tall to be a second baseman, do you think he's got the goods to possibly stay there long-term?

Reed: We'll see. We moved Jimmy over there to develop some diversity. Jimmy is an electric player. He can do a lot of things. He's an exciting player both offensively and defensively. He needs to learn tempo of the game and control, not play out of control so much. These are all maturity things that come with time and there's nothing you can do except give them the time to go out there and play. Every young player needs to learn the tempo and the speed the game is played at, and until they do they're going to make numerous mistakes. You're not going to get around it, it's just how it is. The only way they do that is through instruction, information, and quite honestly, more games - just playing games and going out there, feeling the speed of the game, learning when you need to be fast and when you don't, the control, the tempo, everything. Quite honestly those are the keys to the infield and they take the longest to develop.

PinstripesPlus.com: Did you get to see enough of Robert Lyerly to form an opinion?

Reed: I saw him right away in Staten Island, right out of the gate, just to see where he was at. Then he had the sports hernia I believe so I haven't really gotten to see a lot of him. He swung the bat pretty well back in Instructional League and we'll need to see more of him in Spring Training.

PinstripesPlus.com: I know he doesn't get a lot of the love because he struck out a million times and he's an older guy at a lower level, but Kevin Mahoney has to be a player right up your alley with the way he plays defense. I've made the point to our subscribers that, with his power, he could be a guy if he could play defense like that over at second base. Do you think he could make that transition?

Reed: He just got drafted and he showed a well advanced approach to defense right away, which obviously didn't go unnoticed. For me he's a 'sleeper'. Here's a guy who is polished defensively. I mean he could play defensively at the upper levels right now. Everything for him revolves around that stick. We've got some good people in the organization and I think given some time and the opportunity to focus on some things, I think they'll address it. It's going to be interesting to see what happens with 'Mo' over the next year or two. Obviously not having seen him at short or second, but seeing his ability and the athleticism and the body control, I would think he could make that transition fairly easily.

PinstripesPlus.com: Jose Mojica came back this year from the ACL injury, not an easy injury to overcome especially defensively. He also doesn't have the prototypical middle infield speed. What do you like about him defensively and what do you think he needs to improve?

Reed: I like the way that he grew up this year. He got the injury and that can be very frustrating, especially as a young player when you want to get going and climb up the ladder. He learned how to be patient, he learned how to get his work in everyday, he learned how to work through [the injury], and went out there and played with the knee brace. I know he didn't like it and he felt like it limited him out there, but he stuck with it and when he got it off it was like untying the wings. He just really started to fly and started to show the movements and athleticism that we know he has. And I think he started to gain the confidence that he was going to be okay, his knee was fine, and it seemed week by week you could see him trusting it more and that explosiveness coming back in. Hopefully he stays healthy and comes back strong next year.

PinstripesPlus.com: Of the players I didn't mention, is there a guy we should be paying attention to?

Reed: The guy that seems to be flying under the radar is Kevin Smith because of the impact he can have on the team. He's a blue collar guy. What he does for his infielders, I don't know if you can place a value on it. Remember Doug Mientkiewicz? Gold Glover at first base, I think Smitty has that kind of ability. This guy is special on defense. He keeps pounding it out at a pace of about .280 or .290. For a player at each level there's a confidence level they have to get over to show what they're really capable of. I don't know if Smitty got over that hurdle [in Double-A]. I don't know if he'll get over that hurdle, but if he does, he's a guy who can help you. I love him. I watch him and just shake my head all the time. I seem to do that every game, it's like 'wow'.
