Post-Draft Q&A with Damon Oppenheimer

With the 2010 MLB Draft all over and done with, PinstripesPlus checks in with Yankees Vice President of Scouting Damon Oppenheimer for a Q&A session to talk about how he felt they did in the draft, how he feels about signing their high-ceiling selections, what they saw in Cito Culver, and much, much more!

PinstripesPlus.com: Let's start right at the top – talk about your first round pick, Cito Culver.

Damon Oppenheimer: The kid's really got a lot of ability. He can play shortstop, he's got a well above average arm, he's an above average runner, he slows the game down to where he makes it look easy, especially from a guy coming from the northeast, he can hit from both sides and we've seen power in his bat. He's not going to come out to the Gulf Coast League and hit ten home runs I wouldn't expect, but heck, the guy hits with wood now and hits balls over fences. We see the potential for power and the fact that he's 17 years old makes him very projectable. On top of that we know his makeup. We've had him on teams. When you're able to know the makeup, see the tools, watch the performance, and when all of those match up you go 'he's a good player'.

PinstripesPlus.com: There's obviously some similarities between he and last year's first round pick, Slade Heathcott, at least from a family history standpoint of problems with the law. Did that come into play at all in your decision?

Oppenheimer: [Area scout] Matt Hyde has known Cito for over a year. Tim Alexander who is our associate scout up there has known Cito for five years, maybe longer. We've known everything about this for a long time. Just as normal we sent in Chad Bohling, who is our mental conditioning guy, and he went in and talked to Cito. So we addressed everything. And he doesn't come across or play like somebody, or act out off the field like somebody who that might have had anything go on outside his [baseball] life. He just goes out there and plays his butt off, plays hard, and stays out of trouble. We didn't have any issues with him at all. In fact Chad talked about it - a lot of kids at this stage of their lives had never been through any adversity and this guy has already been through major adversity, and he's performing and showing the ability to overcome it. So we thought it was a strong mental side by him.

PinstripesPlus.com: Picking Culver wasn't exactly lauded by some, both in the media at places like ESPN and Baseball America, and amongst the fans. How would you say he was regarded in the scouting community?

Oppenheimer: You know as well as anybody that I value the people the Yankees employ more than anybody, obviously more than Baseball America and more than the rest of the scouting community. But I do pay attention to things. It comes into your head - I've got one-hundred years of scouting experience that went in and saw this guy...baseball experience, scouting experience...and we don't talk amongst ourselves before we go see guys. We don't say 'Damon likes this guy and I'm going to like him'. Our guys go in there as independent thinkers and I was one of the last ones to go in there and see him. By the time I got in there I had respected baseball guys that then told me 'this is a potential Major League shortstop who is a switch-hitter and these guys are first round picks'. That part [making the pick] wasn't hard at all for me to deal with because I've got guys that are good scouts and I've got guys who have been on Major League fields. I trust our guys.

PinstripesPlus.com: Let's move on to Angelo Gumbs. He's listed as a shortstop/centerfielder type. Talk about him a little bit and how do you guys envision him in your organization?

Oppenheimer: We just know that we put him out in centerfield that he's going to be very good. He's going to be more advanced in centerfield right now than he's going to be in the infield, but we're going to talk about it. Do we play him at second base some? Does he also take balls over at shortstop with Cito? Does he go to centerfield and just hang out there? We're not really sure, but we know we've got a guy who is really athletic who can hit, and has big-time strength in his bat. Once again we're getting another above average runner in the middle of the field who is an athlete. Those things will play out. This kid doesn't turn 18 until October so he's one of the youngest guys in this draft.

PinstripesPlus.com: Some have dropped Matt LaPorta comparisons with Rob Segedin, but if you take away the obvious difference in that he's not a switch-hitter, is there a comparison between he and Bradley Suttle?

Oppenheimer: This guy can hit. He's a right-handed hitter - I think what we're going to do, not that he's not a good third baseman because he is a nice third baseman, but we could use a guy in a corner outfield spot that has some power and can hit. So I think we're going to try him out in right field. He ran a 6.8, 60-yard dash for us so he should be able to go out there. We'll see how it goes defensively.

PinstripesPlus.com: For me Gabe Encinas is one of the more intriguing guys. What kind of upside are we talking about here?

Oppenheimer: It is, it's upside. He's a guy who could really come on and be a good one for us real soon. We've seen him where he's been up to 92 mph and he's got a now breaking ball that works. He's a young-body kid that still has room to fill out and grow, and the guy has a feel for pitching right now. He's the kind of guy we like, guys that can come and compete, and throw the ball over the plate and still be projectable. And he's played some pretty good competition out there in Southern California. He knows how to pitch and combining that projection with knowing how to pitch as a high school kid, we're pretty excited about that.

PinstripesPlus.com: He's almost a little Brett Marshall-like it seems.

Oppenheimer: He's a different sized guy. This is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound guy. Marshall probably had more of a now slider and would go out and give you a little more now velocity, but with Encinas' body type he's probably more projectable than Marshall was.

PinstripesPlus.com: Mason Williams is obviously very intriguing too. What's the book on him?

Oppenheimer: He's 6-foot-1 and he's 165 pounds. He's a lean, real athletic looking - his physical baseball comparison would be what Tommy Goodwin looked like. Just picture that. He's a top of the charts runner. On our scale he's a 70 runner and he can throw. You can probably flip a coin in terms of athleticism between Gumbs, Williams, and Culver, and if you flip it enough times it'll probably lean towards Williams. He just needs to get stronger. If he gets stronger, look out, he could be an exciting kid. His dad played in the NFL so he has the bloodlines. He's come over to our complex to work out here and there since November. We like him. He's got a big pricetag that was put out during the season and we're just going to work at it all summer and see if we can come up with something. Nothing for sure is done on that one, but we're going to try though.

PinstripesPlus.com: Taylor Anderson keeps getting the Corban Joseph comp with everyone I talk to. Fair?

Oppenheimer: Not yet because Corban's hitting .300 in the Florida State League which makes it hard, but at the same stage in their development coming out of high school the comparison could be fair. Corban was a better shortstop at the same stage. With Jake he might be able to stay in the infield, but most likely we're looking at an outfielder who can hit. He's got a good way about him in the box. He's a guy that Andy Cannizaro saw a lot and he feels real comfortable with the way he swings the bat. We looked at him quite a bit and we think he's a good hitter. He doesn't have the blazing speed tool but he's a guy who at least runs a 6.8-60. Is he going to profile in left or right? Well the power is going to have come for that to happen. In terms of the speed he's not going to be a burner out there in centerfield but he's going to be good enough outfielder to play any of [those positions]. Is the speed going to improve? Is the power going to improve? If those happen, we've got a chance on a guy who can impact the game pretty good.

PinstripesPlus.com: Sticking with the high school guys, let's move on to Ben Gamel. Is he a real centerfielder?

Oppenheimer: Real similar situation, Gamel's a guy who can hit and he's hit for a long time. We've watched him in big time competition and he's been a guy who has produced with the bat. He might have a little more power than Jake. The kid is a good outfielder. Again, if this guy was a flier he would have gone higher in the draft, but he's not. Instincts-wise in centerfield he can play out there. This kid can hit though. Hopefully we get some power out of him. If he develops that we've got another guy who can impact the game.

PinstripesPlus.com: Thomas Kahnle from Lynn University, not exactly known as a baseball powerhouse program. What can you tell us about him?

Oppenheimer: Orleans in the Cape [Cod League] is good and he had 18 innings and struck out 22, and only gave up nine hits up there against really good competition as a closer. We see him as a reliever. We're talking about a power arm guy. We've seen him up to 97 mph, pitching at 94 mph as a starter. He's not going to be a pitch-ability guy but he's got a good secondary pitch. We see him as a guy who is going to come out of the bullpen and potentially impact our Major Leauge club in those late innings, a guy who can come out and throw hard with sharp stuff and he's a put-together guy. He just needs to get with our [development] people and throw strikes, continue to improve on throwing strikes. Our guys seem to be able to get guys to do that.

PinstripesPlus.com: Kyle Roller is already getting tabbed as more of a designated hitter type than a true first baseman. Talk about his game a little bit.

Oppenheimer: He can hit. He's proven he can hit. He can hit for power, he can hit with wood, and he's a strong guy. You look at him and you know he's a strong guy. He's got real low body fat. He's just a bull. I sat there last year and saw him in the Cape - you're there to see everyone else and this guy keeps hitting the ball hard to all parts of the park, and hitting it out. He plays some first base, he plays some DH, and he's not built like Derek Jeter so not many guys are looking at him as strongly, but we kept looking at it and our guys thought he could hit, they've seen him hit, we know there's power, and it's pretty impressive. I think he was the MVP of the Cape with those kinds of numbers and I've always paid attention a lot to what guys do up there in that league with wood because it gives you a hell of an idea of what kind of professional hitter they have the chance to be.

PinstripesPlus.com: What can you tell me about Taylor Morton?

Oppenheimer: He's from outside of Memphis and we're talking about a guy who has been a catcher and a pitcher, but he really has more of pitcher's arm action. He's 6-foot-2, 6-foot-3, 190 [pounds], and ultra-projectable. They've used him out of the pen, they've used him as a starter. As a pen guy he's been up to 95-96 mph, he throws strikes, his secondary stuff is a little inconsistent but that's stuff that Nardi and those guys can develop. We've seen it happen. On top of that he's a really good athlete. He's a really projectable, high-end guy.

PinstripesPlus.com: Chris Austin is listed as a catcher but I'm assuming he's going to the outfield, correct?

Oppenheimer: Yeah I think we even announced him as an outfielder. That's what we plan on using him as. With Chris Austin you're not buying the run tool or the great defensive tool, you're buying the hit tool and power. He's a high school kid that's been through some adversity in his life too and this guy puts quality at-bats together and can hit the ball out of the park. When you try to get right fielders you're hoping for the hit-power combination and we think he's got the chance to have some pretty good power.

PinstripesPlus: It almost sounds like he's Brandon Laird-like. Is that fair?

Oppenheimer: It might be. I think when we got 'Lairdo' we didn't know if he was going to be able to play third. You always thought it was going to be first or if the defense was going to be good enough. That might be a good comp. This guy does have some thump in his bat and we're pretty excited to sign a guy like this down here.

PinstripesPlus.com: Aside from the fact he pitched at St. John's, Daniel Burawa is intriguing because he hasn't pitched very much this past year. What's the story with him?

Oppenheimer: What we're going to do with Burawa is continue the process of evaluating him. It's hard to see these guys because they're closers and from up in that part of the country, it's hard to wait around on a closer. Our looks on him have been very good lately because of the tournaments and stuff like that, so now he's going to Cape Cod and we're going to watch him there and see how it is again. He's another guy with a big arm and a big upside because he hasn't pitched much. We're going to see if he goes up there and earns some money.

PinstripesPlus: Between Kahnle, Burawa, and Jacob, you took some power bullpen arms. Talk about Kevin Jacob. From the reports he could be the hardest thrower of the three.

Oppenheimer: Probably, yeah. He battled some injuries this year up and down. He wasn't on rosters because of being nicked up. We don't know the extent of where the injuries are right now, but he's going to go to Cape Cod. It's going to take him a couple of weeks to get there but we're going to then evaluate it. If he throws well, we're going to make a run at him. Somebody is going up there this summer and earn some money, that's the way we're approaching it. Go up, show us what you've got. We've got some money, not an endless budget, that's for sure. Hal [Steinbrenner] had let us know there's a ceiling to this thing and I know what is. I'm hoping some guys will go up there and say to me with their performance, 'sign me, I'm the one that deserves the money, let's go'.

PinstripesPlus.com: A guy who reportedly doesn't throw nearly as hard but seems to have a deep arsenal is Zachary Varce. What's the deal with him?

Oppenheimer: Our guys have a little David Robertson comparable with him in terms of the deception of the fastball. When we got Robertson it was 89-92 mph and it was a deceptive fastball. He never lit people up with tremendous stuff but he developed a better breaking ball and all of that stuff. We liked him. Varce we see as possibly in that same light, though he'll probably go out as a starter. Mike Thurman is a good scout and feels good about this one where we took him.

PinstripesPlus: Thoughts on Chase Whitely?

Oppenheimer: A conversion guy, we took him as a pitcher. He's a big physical guy and we see him as a bullpen guy that comes in, who's athletic. We think his stuff is good now and we think it can get better with the development people here. In the 15th round you get an athlete who touches 93, you feel good about that.

PinstripesPlus: Travis Dean, another high school guy, what can you tell us about him?

Oppenheimer: Dean is from that Boston area and he's a really good, physical looking kid. Matty [Hyde] lives up in that Boston area and he also has an associate scout, Dan Danato, but Danny played in our system and he coaches both baseball and hockey in high school up there. He told Matty 'I just saw this kid again, he's throwing the ball real good and you need to bring him down to your tryout camp'. So we brought him down to Staten Island and he's throwing, it's a 25-pitch deal, but he's throwing 90-92 and he's got a real good body, a loose arm, and a good delivery, he's spinning the slider, and you're going 'this looks pretty good'. He's going to pitch all summer for a team up there so we'll take a look at what we have.

PinstripesPlus.com: It's been my experience that there's a lot of upside with many of these Canadian kids. Does that ring true with Evan Rutckyj?

Oppenheimer: Yeah, I think the BBA's had this guy going off of the board pretty good. I think his signability got in the way of him dropping all the way to this point. He's a big lefty, he's not been pitching forever, he's a big physical, good looking kid. The fastball that we've seen has touched 92 but we've also seen him lately where he's had some 87's. He has a nice slider. He had a nice day pitching against the Blue Jays in Extended [Spring Training] that had Aaron Hill on it and some others. He pitched well and had some strikeouts, stuff like that. He's a tough guy, he's real projectable. Obviously we value him more than a 16th round pick. I just think the signability got in the way of him going higher. Again, we're going to watch him pitch and hopefully he's one of those guys that steps up and says 'I want to be a Yankee and my performance dictates getting paid'. He's a tough kid drafted by the Ontario Hockey League to be a hockey player too. He concentrated on that for a few years so he's new to this.

PinstripesPlus.com: You almost described Nik Turley to a tee, even size-wise they're the same, and Turley also feel pretty far down in the draft.

Oppenheimer: He had better now stuff than Nik...a little bit better now stuff and Nik was more of a younger-body guy. This is kind of a man's now body.

PinstripesPlus.com: Kevin Jordan might be the story of the summer when it comes to your picks.

Oppenheimer: This is one where all of our guys have seen him, but I wasn't able to see him. He was on our list real good. I was hoping to see him early this spring and then he got sick. He never really got his health or strength back so this draft is based purely off of the summer and the fall, and we liked him there. At this point in the draft, we had a chance at these kinds of tools and this kind of athlete, if he gets healthy and we're able to see him play this summer as a healthy guy, this might be a steal.

PinstripesPlus.com: I guess because of Segedin you got some good looks at Preston Claiborne. What can you tell us about him?

Oppenheimer: This goes back a long ways and Preston probably doesn't remember it, but he was a third baseman who went to a workout that our area scout [Mark Batchko] set up in Texas where he was there with Austin Jackson. So I go back a long way remembering Preston Claiborne as a young kid. I've been able to see him pitch for a long time. Andy Cannizaro obviously has connections at Tulane and watched him pitch quite a bit coming out of the pen. He just thinks he's a kid who throws hard out of the pen, a bulldog type guy that's going to come at you, and another guy that's got a good arm. For a senior and at this point in the draft, we didn't just get a senior sign, we got a prospect because he can throw hard and he's got a pretty good slider.

PinstripesPlus.com: A general philosophy question - did having young starters already in the system like Nik Turley, Mariel Checo, Mikey O'Brien, Evan DeLuca, Matt Richardson, etc, etc, allow you guys to focus more on hard-throwing college reliever types in this draft?

Oppenheimer: It allows me to take more hard throwers just like you described and it also allows me to take guys that we're okay with watching this summer and running the risk that, the ceiling was there and we'll watch them this summer, but if we're not there because their demands are crazy or it just doesn't happen for them, then you know what, we're okay because the system has a bunch of players in it. I think some teams end up having to fill up their rosters and fill some of their minor league teams in some of these rounds where we're taking guys we think still have ceiling and potential to be prospects.

PinstripesPlus.com: In that same vein then, on the position prospects side you guys also have a lot of depth, and obviously the Latin American program has something to do with that too. Does having that kind of youth already in place allow you take even more youth in this draft? It seems like you guys only got younger with this draft and you were already young to begin with.

Oppenheimer: You're right because the high school kids we drafted last year need to play because they're prospects and now if you draft a bunch of college kids on top of that, now they're piling into each other. You sit here with Pat Roessler and you sit here with Mark [Newman], and you look at your organization's depth and you do have to consider where your guys are going to get at-bats. Where are they going to come from? That's a whole-nother part of the puzzle. It doesn't behoove us to take a high school catcher in this draft. How are you going to give a guy at-bats when you've got Gary Sanchez, you got Arcia, you've got Murphy, you've got Higashioka, etc. Philosophy-wise, it does come into play.

PinstripesPlus.com: The University of San Diego is becoming one of the better programs these days. What can you tell us about Mike Ferraro?

Oppenheimer: This guy is a college guy but he's a big guy, a big athlete. We really liked what we saw of his batting against right-handed pitching. It wasn't quite as good against lefties, but he's got tools too. We're talking about a guy who has tools and has swung the bat really good, especially against right-handers. We've got some good coaches who can help this guy. The theme was to get some big guys and include athleticism, and that's what we think we did here.

PinstripesPlus.com: Two college right-handed pitchers - Conor Mullee and Dustin Hobbs - what can you tell us about them?

Oppenheimer: Two different kinds of guys, they might be polar opposite almost. Mullee, again, another guy who is fairly new to pitching. He's been a position player and we're talking about a guy who at our workout in Staten Island was showing a lot of 93 & 94's with a really good arm action and needs a lot of work with his slider. Even as a college guy I'd think we'd bring him down here [GCL] where we can speed up the process with pitching coaches. He's a guy we've got a chance to develop, that's for sure. At that spot in the draft we're getting velocity from a good body. Hobbs has a really good delivery and arm action. The fastball is more in that 88-91 mph range and can pitch. He's not a stuff guy. He has the delivery, the arm action, and can really be a pitcher. There's still some projection though because he's another guy who hasn't pitched forever.

PinstripesPlus.com: Josh Dezse, a 6-foot-4 high school kid who can hit the mid-90's, he screams signability.

Oppenheimer: Yeah there's some signability issues. We saw him real early in the year and he was good, and then I think he wore out as the season went on. We'd like to see him this summer to see if he can get back to what we saw early on. He was 89-94 mph with a good curveball. We think the kid's got a chance to have a big arm. He wasn't a guy that a lot of people got to see a ton of though so we'll follow through the summer and see what we've got.

PinstripesPlus.com: Would William [Keenan] Kish fall under the same lines of a signability, high-upside guy?

Oppenheimer: We've had Keenan for a long time. We've known him from the summers. We've had him play a position with Matt Hyde's team and he's also pitched. He's got a big ceiling, he's a really good athlete, and he's got passion for the game. I really like the kid. I'm not really sure what will happen this summer, but we're keeping our fingers crossed that he turns it on and becomes one of those guys that we might end up signing. He's high energy and a class act.

PinstripesPlus.com: You took a lot of these high school outfielders real late in the draft - Ramsay, Brugman, Gerber, Pearson, even Paul O'Neill's nephew - are these guys all realistic possibilities to sign?

Oppenheimer: Obviously you can't sign all of them, but it was just a year where we had guys like this on our board that we liked and that a scout wanted to watch them this summer, or really had a good feel for them. No, there's not space for all of these guys and they won't all get signed, but at this point in the draft you don't know who is going to become the guy to go out and sign. We're just going to go out there and see - it might be that none of them are ready to sign, but there were some tools there or some stuff that we like about them to say 'let's watch this summer' and see if one or two of them are ready, and if we've got the space then we'll do it.

PinstripesPlus.com: Do you feel like you guys are setting yourselves up for even more youth and high-ceiling guys going forward, keeping up this 'youth breeding youth' theme you've got going on?

Oppenheimer: I think you have to. If you want to get guys that can impact New York, they have to be guys that have ceiling and athleticism. Where we pick in the draft, it's generally hard to get those kinds of guys out of college. Even if it's the case of a college guy sitting there with the high school guy, I really like our player development people. I like what Mark Newman's going going on with Pat [Roessler], and Nardi, and James [Rowson], and all of the other coaches. You feel good. We're putting young middle infielders with Jody Reed. You're putting young hitting guys with passion with guys like James Rowson. You feel good about that stuff and it makes you feel good that you can take high school guys that need work, but with that work they also have ceiling. It's hard for colleges to develop [players] because they are so limited on what they can do in terms of practice time and game time. So I feel real good about the way we're going. That being said, and you know it, you take guys with ceiling and you take high school guys, there's going to be some that don't make it. You know what though, I trust that our guys are going to make them get there.

\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: For me Gabe Encinas is one of the more intriguing guys. What kind of upside are we talking about here?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: It is, it's upside.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: He's almost a little Brett Marshall-like it seems.
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: He's a different sized guy. This is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound guy. Marshall probably had more of a now slider and would go out and give you a little more now velocity, but with Encinas' body type he's probably more projectable than Marshall was.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Mason Williams is obviously very intriguing too. What's the book on him?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: He's 6-foot-1 and he's 165 pounds.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Taylor Anderson keeps getting the Corban Joseph comp with everyone I talk to. Fair?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Not yet because Corban's hitting .300 in the Florida State League which makes it hard, but at the same stage in their development coming out of high school the comparison could be fair.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Sticking with the high school guys, let's move on to Ben Gamel. Is he a real centerfielder?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Real similar situation, Gamel's a guy who can hit and he's hit for a long time.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Thomas Kahnle from Lynn University, not exactly known as a baseball powerhouse program. What can you tell us about him?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Orleans in the Cape [Cod League] is good and he had 18 innings and struck out 22, and only gave up nine hits up there against really good competition as a closer.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Kyle Roller is already getting tabbed as more of a designated hitter type than a true first baseman. Talk about his game a little bit.
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: He can hit.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: What can you tell me about Taylor Morton?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: He's from outside of Memphis and we're talking about a guy who has been a catcher and a pitcher, but he really has more of pitcher's arm action.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Chris Austin is listed as a catcher but I'm assuming he's going to the outfield, correct?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Yeah I think we even announced him as an outfielder.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus: It almost sounds like he's Brandon Laird-like. Is that fair?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: It might be. I think when we got 'Lairdo' we didn't know if he was going to be able to play third. You always thought it was going to be first or if the defense was going to be good enough. That might be a good comp. This guy does have some thump in his bat and we're pretty excited to sign a guy like this down here.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Aside from the fact he pitched at St. John's, Daniel Burawa is intriguing because he hasn't pitched very much this past year. What's the story with him?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: What we're going to do with Burawa is continue the process of evaluating him.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus: Between Kahnle, Burawa, and Jacob, you took some power bullpen arms. Talk about Kevin Jacob. From the reports he could be the hardest thrower of the three.
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Probably, yeah.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: A guy who reportedly doesn't throw nearly as hard but seems to have a deep arsenal is Zachary Varce. What's the deal with him?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Our guys have a little David Robertson comparable with him in terms of the deception of the fastball.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus: Thoughts on Chase Whitely?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: A conversion guy, we took him as a pitcher. He's a big physical guy and we see him as a bullpen guy that comes in, who's athletic. We think his stuff is good now and we think it can get better with the development people here. In the 15th round you get an athlete who touches 93, you feel good about that.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus: Travis Dean, another high school guy, what can you tell us about him?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Dean is from that Boston area and he's a really good, physical looking kid.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: It's been my experience that there's a lot of upside with many of these Canadian kids. Does that ring true with Evan Rutckyj?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Yeah, I think the BBA's had this guy going off of the board pretty good.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: You almost described Nik Turley to a tee, even size-wise they're the same, and Turley also feel pretty far down in the draft.
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: He had better now stuff than Nik...a little bit better now stuff and Nik was more of a younger-body guy. This is kind of a man's now body.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Kevin Jordan might be the story of the summer when it comes to your picks.
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: This is one where all of our guys have seen him, but I wasn't able to see him.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: I guess because of Segedin you got some good looks at Preston Claiborne. What can you tell us about him?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: This goes back a long ways and Preston probably doesn't remember it, but he was a third baseman who went to a workout that our area scout [Mark Batchko] set up in Texas where he was there with Austin Jackson.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: A general philosophy question - did having young starters already in the system like Nik Turley, Mariel Checo, Mikey O'Brien, Evan DeLuca, Matt Richardson, etc, etc, allow you guys to focus more on hard-throwing college reliever types in this draft?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: It allows me to take more hard throwers just like you described and it also allows me to take guys that we're okay with watching this summer and running the risk that, the ceiling was there and we'll watch them this summer, but if we're not there because their demands are crazy or it just doesn't happen for them, then you know what, we're okay because the system has a bunch of players in it. I think some teams end up having to fill up their rosters and fill some of their minor league teams in some of these rounds where we're taking guys we think still have ceiling and potential to be prospects.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: In that same vein then, on the position prospects side you guys also have a lot of depth, and obviously the Latin American program has something to do with that too. Does having that kind of youth already in place allow you take even more youth in this draft? It seems like you guys only got younger with this draft and you were already young to begin with.
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: You're right because the high school kids we drafted last year need to play because they're prospects and now if you draft a bunch of college kids on top of that, now they're piling into each other.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: The University of San Diego is becoming one of the better programs these days. What can you tell us about Mike Ferraro?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: This guy is a college guy but he's a big guy, a big athlete.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Two college right-handed pitchers - Conor Mullee and Dustin Hobbs - what can you tell us about them?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Two different kinds of guys, they might be polar opposite almost.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Josh Dezse, a 6-foot-4 high school kid who can hit the mid-90's, he screams signability.
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Yeah there's some signability issues.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Would William [Keenan] Kish fall under the same lines of a signability, high-upside guy?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: We've had Keenan for a long time.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: You took a lot of these high school outfielders real late in the draft - Ramsay, Brugman, Gerber, Pearson, even Paul O'Neill's nephew - are these guys all realistic possibilities to sign?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Obviously you can't sign all of them, but it was just a year where we had guys like this on our board that we liked and that a scout wanted to watch them this summer, or really had a good feel for them.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus.com: Do you feel like you guys are setting yourselves up for even more youth and high-ceiling guys going forward, keeping up this 'youth breeding youth' theme you've got going on?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: I think you have to.
