Damon Oppenheimer Post-Draft Interview

With the signing deadline at midnight this past Monday, Damon Oppenheimer put the capper on a year of feverish work to bring exciting new talent to the Yankees. Fresh off an AM surf session, we sat down with the head of amateur scouting the morning after to discuss the recent signees, how the draft is approached, and even asked several questions submitted by Yankee draft fans.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: I've got some inquiries directly from fans, but before that let's get to some specific player review now that all the signings are complete. Evan Rutckyj has the look of a pitching prospect, but I found in my pre-draft interview with him that he's new to the craft and his mechanics needed some serious work. What did you see in him this summer that led you to take the chance on signing him?

Damon Oppenheimer: Well, he's a ceiling guy obviously; a guy that's got a lot of potential. I mean, he's a huge left-hander and he's got a great makeup in terms of the way he goes about attacking hitters. He's ultra aggressive and very tough – probably one of the tougher guys in the whole draft. He's got a big ceiling, you know? He's got work to be done in terms of his development as a pitcher, but there are a few little things that I think our guys can do and we've got a chance for some power stuff.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Did you see any velo increase this summer with the changes he already made, or is he still working 88-90 MPH?

Damon Oppenheimer: It's not like there was a big jump in velocity. We've seen him 91, 92, occasionally a 94, but he didn't have a huge velocity spike over the summer. His breaking ball did improve though. The last couple of starts he showed some real depth and bite to it, and that made us feel good about signing him.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: It was tough to find any information on his summer ball experience. Where did he end up pitching?

Damon Oppenheimer: He pitched on a team out of Windsor, and I'm not exactly sure what kind of team it was, but it was more like a men's league that played teams in places like Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo. It wasn't anything that was overly deep in talent or a big name league, but for a pitcher it was fine for us to be able to scout him, and we got in at least five of his starts this summer.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: What has Mason Williams done between draft day and just minutes before the signing deadline that made him the highest paid player in this year's class?

Damon Oppenheimer: He played a LOT of games this summer for Midland – I think he played in over 50 for them. He really capped his whole summer off by hitting balls hard against Dylan Bundy – linedrives, doubles – running 4.0 flat down the line, and really showed a flair to be able to compete when it really meant something, which was the case for Midland at the CMWS. At the CMWS he was probably by far the most exciting and best tooled baseball player on any team at the event, which is usually a spot where there a lot of good players. He just continued to refine himself and he continued to get better all summer long. The fact that he went out and played this full schedule, went away from home, made you realize just how much this kid really wanted it. We probably saw him play 30 games this summer, and everybody came away with the same thing: this guy can be a star in center field, he's got impact potential, and he's got everything we're looking for and looking to do when it comes to a prospect. You know, the draft just happens to be on June 7th. If it was in August there's a chance that he wouldn't even get to us with the way he has played this summer.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Would you say that Angelo Gumbs profiles as a similar type of high-ceiling athlete?

Damon Oppenheimer: I think that we hit on that with the three kids – Cito, Angelo, and Mason. All three are middle of the field athletes with baseball skills, and that's exciting to us. All three of them bring athleticism, they bring tools, and they bring some baseball skill and I don't think you can always get that. Mason is the fastest of the group, and between he and Gumbs specifically, Angelo has more power in his swing. So they have some basic similarities, but the specifics are a bit different.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: You drafted a couple of conversions on the college side, but the one that stands out is from the prep ranks this year was Taylor Morton. What kind of future do you see for the former catcher if he ends up developing?

Damon Oppenheimer: He's one of those guys that's a combination of athleticism and size, and the stuff we saw at times from Taylor, putting him full-time at pitching now with professional coaching, we think he's a kid that's got a chance at having some power stuff with a high ceiling. He's big, he's athletic, and once we get him into our system I think they can really help him out and he's got a chance to blossom and become a real power guy. We're pretty excited to get Taylor.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: How rare for is it for you to see a high school RHP with a changeup as his out pitch already?

Damon Oppenheimer: I think it's starting to become a little more common because the changeup puts less pressure on a kid's arm, so good, younger pitching coaches are starting to teach that pitch. It's a really effective pitch and it takes less of a toll. I think we're going to start seeing it more, and it gives Morton a leg up on some of the other guys because he'll be able to go out there, use his, and throw it for strikes.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Did you know going into the draft that Jake Anderson was going to need TJS?

Damon Oppenheimer: No, we did not. That turned out to be an unfortunate situation for him. When we signed him he was playing for a coach on his summer league team, before he actually signed, who brought him into pitch. That's not something he normally does, and he said he had a little bit of a twinge in there – something like that. We gave him his physical, didn't really think it was going to be major, but it ends up that he has to have TJS because of that incident. Luckily for us he's a position player so he'll be impacted much less, but we would have liked for him to have a year to develop. I think it could work out in some ways for him because he needed to get stronger, and this is a time where he'll be able to really focus on that in his rehab. There's really nothing we could have done about the injury though.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: A lot of fans are really intrigued by Kevin Towers being on the staff. Were there any specific draftees that he had a strong hand in evaluating?

Damon Oppenheimer: Kevin saw a lot of kids for us, and it was great to get back together with him. He and I had worked together in San Diego years ago in their scouting department. He really had a strong hand in, and made a good push for Mason Williams. That was one of the guys that he was really heavily involved in and really liked – Mason was the main guy that he helped us over the hump with in terms of player evaluation. When you get an ex-GM that endorses a guy to the level that he endorsed Mason Williams, it puts people's minds at ease, people like Cash who can say "this guy knows talent, he's saying it, and combined with the rest of my guys saying it, there's little doubt."

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: You seemed to be seeking starters in the high school ranks as usual, but the majority of the college selections were relievers. Was this a conscious effort?

Damon Oppenheimer: That doesn't mean I'd stay away from college starters, it's just the way it fell for us. When you take four position players with your first four picks, your high-end college starters will generally be gone by then, and when I say high-end I'm talking about starters with a chance to have power stuff. Those guys are usually gobbled up at that point, and when we decided the best thing to do with our first four rounds was to take position players, that puts us in a situation where we're going to end up with college relievers. A fortunate byproduct there is that you'll end up filling your starting slots with high school kids, which is nice because by the time they get to the big leagues and we've developed them the right way, there shouldn't be much issue with where their innings are. You shouldn't have to deal with the Joba Rules and things like that because their innings should be built up by that time. So it's a really good situation for us. We like the high school starters because we think our guys can develop them and it's nice that we're able to supplement the bullpen with power arms from the college ranks.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Did you run into a budget ceiling at the end or were the gaps between your valuations and the players' numbers just too large to bridge?

Damon Oppenheimer: I thought we signed pretty much who we wanted to sign. Did we run into the budget at the end? Yes, we maxed out on the budget that we had, but we signed the guys we really wanted to sign.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: How close were you on Dezse?

Damon Oppenheimer: You'd probably have to ask him. I don't know how close we were. We made him a good offer, but at the end when they made it clear to us they were going to college we basically took his money and used it for some of the other signings. So there wasn't anything left even if he had come to us at the last minute.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Pre-draft, do you slot or group players by the bonus that you would be willing to pay them? Do you have a pool of $500K players, a pool of $1 million players, etc?

Damon Oppenheimer: No, not really. We know what we think a player's value is based on our reports, which all have a section asking how much you would pay the kid and what round you think his value is – that type of thing. We line them up by talent and then try to get an idea of their asking prices. Sometimes you might get a kid who, organizationally , you have him rated as a 5th,6th, or 7th round type player, but you know his asking price is a $1 million, so taking him just wouldn't make sense.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: After spending so much time scouting these kids, how hard is it to see some of your personal favorites get selected by other teams?

Damon Oppenheimer: It hurts for a while – it does. There are some guys that you really have a desire to get, but you know what? You keep watching them throughout their career and you pull for those guys because you've met with them and really liked them. In last year's draft I was obviously tickled to get Slade Heathcott, and another guy I had really taken an affection to was Michael Trout – he and Slade were guys that we were really hoping would slide down to where we picked because we really liked them. When Michael got selected, did that hurt? Sure, but you're also pulling for him, and you're pulling for Eddie Bane who drafted him because you know that he's done a heck of a job on it, too.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Is being a scout the type of situation where you're competing against each other very strongly, but at the same time rooting for each other because you're all part of the same fraternity?

Damon Oppenheimer: I think that there are certain guys that you have developed a real respect for in your years of scouting that you compete with, but also pull for their players to have success once the process is done because you know how hard this job is and how hard they get after it. There's a core group of guys that have become your good friends who you are still in great competition with, but you still hope to see them do well.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Does the current makeup of the lower-level rosters (availability of IP and ABs) impact the way you pursue players?

Damon Oppenheimer: I think our players all realize that there is healthy competition here and they're not just going to walk in not have to compete for ABs and playing time. I think they understand it and I hope they all think they're good enough to be the best at their position and get the most ABs, but we're getting to a point now where, with what Donnie is doing in the international market and the kind of players we're putting into the system via the draft, we maybe need to start talking about having a team in the Appalachian League so we can get a whole additional tier of players ABs and allow them time to play.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: There has been a lot of talk with a new CBA potentially instituting a hard slotting system. What are your feelings on that?

Damon Oppenheimer: It's such a huge topic and it has so many angles to address that you and I could sit and talk about slotting, capping, and all that stuff for several hours. There are so many things that need to be figured out before someone can just say "ok, we're going to put slotting in now." There are too many variables involved to think that hard slotting will just solve all the problems of the world. In our situation, part of the negotiation process is leverage, and it's a big part of it. If we started a pure slotting system there is zero leverage on the side of the club, I think you're going to lose a lot of high school kids to college, I think you're going to lose a lot of multi-sport athletes, and I think you're going to see it hurt our game – professional baseball – in the long run. You won't see it right away, but eventually you will see some strong effect on the game. So the system definitely needs some work on how it operates, but to just move to a slotting system the way they do it in the NFL or something isn't the answer right now. I think a lot of other things have to be done before we even get to that discussion.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: The signing deadline has already been moved up once in the past few years, but would you like to see it moved up even further? Maybe sometime in July?

Damon Oppenheimer: [laughs] Well first of all I'd like to see it moved up to 5:00 in the afternoon or something like that so we don't have to be up until midnight. I mean if the trading deadline can be moved to a reasonable hour, I don't understand why ours can't be. You know what though? I don't think it would hurt anybody if you changed the deadline to July 15th, 20th, or something like that. Ideally it would be a Wednesday so you'd have the Monday and Tuesday to do work, give physicals and stuff like that. Maybe a date like "the third Wednesday in July" would be good, and would still give the GM time to deal with Trade Deadline issues that needed his attention.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Before I go I just wanted to let you know that I receive considerable feedback from fans who truly appreciate the interviews we do. There's a small but dedicated following of Yankee fans that follow what you and your staff does with great interest, and I just wanted to pass along their gratitude to you for all the work you put into the process.

Damon Oppenheimer: Good, good to hear. I appreciate their support. I appreciate the fans that really get into this stuff, really understand it, and don't just go purely off the national stuff that comes up. Our drafts take time, these are kids that we're taking so they're going to take a little bit of time to develop, but we've brought in guys with a chance to be high-ceiling players and we're excited about their future.
