Andretti in No.1 Car after Sundays race

Sunday's Southern 500 is likely Jeff Green's last weekend in Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s No. 1 Chevrolet this season. Ty Norris, DEI's executive vice president of motorsports, said Friday that John Andretti, fired from Petty Enterprises earlier this season, would drive the No. 1 next weekend at Richmond, Va., and for several other races this season.

"John did a really good job for us at Indianapolis and we were really impressed," Norris said. Andretti qualified and drove a fourth DEI entry at Indy.

"We had an opportunity to see if we could improve our performance. We just talked to him about getting in the car for a while. There is no set time or agenda," Norris said.

"There's no sense in locking ourselves into anything. But if John does what he did for us at Indianapolis, he really impressed a lot of people with what he did in our car there."

Green was hired in May after former driver Steve Park was released by DEI. Green was signed only through the end of this month, however.
