The Penske teammates of Ryan Newman and Rusty Wallace will start 6th and 7th.Six time winner here at Darlington Jeff Gordon brushed the wall and was still able to run a lap fast enough to put him in the top 10 at 9th position.
Michael Waltrip didn't have that kind of luck. He brushed the wall hard coming out of turn 2 and was unable to complete his qualifying lap. He had to take a provisional and will start 38.
Not all the Rookies had a good day at Darlington. Like Johnny Sauter who did make it around on his first lap, but broke loose coming to pit road the next time around and slid backward into water barriers guarding the inside wall at the entrance to pit road. He wound up 24th on the starting grid.
