The Cavaliers cooled off one of the hottest teams in the NBA.
The Cavs prevailed, 140-135 in overtime over the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center. The Wizards came into the game winning nine of their last 10 games, including seven in a row. Cleveland improves to 35-15, while the Wizards drop to 30-21.
Bradley Beal, who led all scorers with 41 points, hit a three-point shot to give the Wizards the lead at 133-131. However, Kyrie Irving tied the game and then hit a three-point shot over Beal to give the Cavs a 136-133 lead with 35 seconds to play.
Irving, who struggled most of the game, took over in overtime by scoring eleven of his 23 points in the final moments. Irving has the highest scoring average in the NBA in overtime since the 2002-03 season. After the Wizards closed the gap to one point at 136-135, the Cavs closed out the game with four three throws by Irving and Kevin Love.
"I just want it very bad," Irving said. "I really want to be part of that in those situations."
The Cavs played most of the overtime period without LeBron James, who hit a falling away bank shot with 0.3 seconds to play in regulation to tie the game 120-120 to send the game to overtime. With no timeouts in regulation, Love threw a full court pass to James, who banked a three-point shot in to send the game to overtime. James game-saving shot came just seconds after James missed a layup that would've won the game with with 3.4 seconds to play in regulation as he went coast-to-coast and missed a lay up with 3.4 seconds to play.
Love led the Cavs with 39 points, while James finished with 32 points and 17 assists. He also hit six three-point shots on eight attempts, while Love hit six treys, as well.
Shump Sprains Ankle: Iman Shumpert sprained his ankle in the second half and did not return. HIs status on how long he will be out is uncertain. Shumpert did not score, but had two rebounds in 23:36. Shumpert was seen in a walking boot after the game.
LeBron Fouls Out: For only the fifth time in his career, LeBron James fouled out in overtime after scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. James hit four three-pointers in the fourth quarter, including a high banking three with 0.3 to play to send the game to overtime. James finished with 32 points and 17 assists.
Kyrie's Back: Kyrie Irving returned to the lineup after sitting out Saturday's win over the Knicks with quad soreness. Irving was just 8-of-24 from the field, but he scored 11 points in overtime and finished with 23 points, including two three-point shots in overtime.
Loving It: Kevin Love led the Cavs with 39 points and 12 rebounds. He hit 6-of-10 from behind the three-point arc. He also was 11-of-11 from the free throw line.
Double T: Tristan Thompson scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds. Thompson was one of three Cavs with double-doubles. James had 32 points and 17 assists and Love had 39 points and 12 rebounds.
Kyle Time: Kyle Korver hit 4-of-8 three-point shots and finished with 13 points.
Dishing It Out: The Cavs had 31 assists with James leading with 17.
50 Percent from Three: The Cavs hit 19-of-38 from behind the three-point line for 50 percent. Love and James each hit six and Korver hit four.
Three Ball: The Cavs hit 14 three point shots on attempts for percent.
Next Up: The Cavs will continue on the their road trip as they travel to Indiana to face the Pacers on Wednesday night at 7 pm.
