J.R. Smith says he still has "a ways to go"

J.R. Smith responded to a report that said he could return as soon as mid-March

Not so fast, says J.R.

Despite a report from ESPN that said J. R. Smith was ahead of schedule from his thumb surgery, Smith took to Twitter to lower expectations, posting:

"Please don't believe the hype. Still a ways to go. "Sources" means they have nothing else to wright. Trusting my process!"

Later, Smith corrected "wright" to "write" on his next post.

Smith was expected to miss 12-14 weeks after having thumb surgery in late December. The original timeline had him returning in late March or early April. However, the ESPN story said he could return as soon as mid-March.

Smith signed a four-year, $57 million extension with Cleveland in the offseason after the Cavs' Finals win. He is averaging 8.6 points per game on 33.7 percent shooting from the field and 36.2 percent from beyond the arc. Smith is in his 13th NBA season.
