Charlotte looks to split its home-and-home series with the Atlanta Hawks

Charlotte Hornets host the Atlanta Hawks in a matinee showdown at Time Warner Cable Arena

Charlotte (0-2) will host defending Southeast Division champion Atlanta (2-1) Sunday at Time Warner Cable Arena, the second game of a home-and-home. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. in the Hornets’ home opener.

The Hornets have won four straight home openers and 8-of-10 since the opening of Time Warner Cable Arena in 2005; both defeats came to the Indiana Pacers (2006 and 2011).

Remarkably, the 2011-12 team that finished 7-59 and ended the campaign with 23 straight losses won its home opener.

The Hawks held off Charlotte, 97-94, at Phillips Arena Friday for the 15th win in the last 17 meetings between the two teams in Atlanta. With the loss, Charlotte has suffered eight straight defeats dating back to last season.

Through three games, the Hawks are led in scoring by Jeff Teague at 18.3 points per game with Al Horford right behind at 18.0 per contest. Teague, who played his college ball at Wake Forest, is also dishing out 5.3 assists a game. Atlanta has five players averaging in double figures.

The Hawks held a 14-point lead over Charlotte before the Hornets fought back. Down by three in the waning seconds, a potential game-tying three from Kemba Walker was off the mark and the Hornets returned to the Queen City winless after a two-game road swing in the southeast.

Six players scored in double-figures for Charlotte Friday. Nicolas Batum paced the Hornets with 14 points. Jeremy Lin, the team’s second leading scorer after two games, came off the bench to score 12, and Jeremy Lamb posted 11 points in his debut despite playing less than 15 minutes.

Batum, Marvin Williams and Al Jefferson each posted a double-double in the loss Friday. It was the second straight contest that Williams accomplished the feat.
