Dallas-Detroit Locker-Room Talk In Quoteboard

The Mavericks continue their habit of making otherwise boring outings a lot more interesting then they ought to be. Instead of a nice tune-up for the four-in-five-nights, the Mavs grind it out against a Pistons team disinclined to roll over and die. Took a 32-point fourth quarter and some serious heroics, but the Mavs got the win, 88-84. Let's see who's feeling chatty. Quoteboard!

A side note about Shawn Marion, who went 1-6 and only scored 4 points . . .
"We had Shawn Marion miss shoot around this morning because he was sick; he clearly wasn't himself." -Coach Rick Carlisle

About playing another sub-90, defense-oriented game . . .
"I give our guys a lot of credit. I mean, it was a slow game, it was the kind of game you had to have patience and discipline to hang in and win." -Coach Rick Carlisle

Regarding Caron Butler, who put Dallas back in front in the fourth quarter . . .
"Caron got us going the start of the 4th quarter with some drives." -Dirk Nowitzki

"I thought a big key to the game was the way Caron started the 4th quarter. He got a short rest and . . . had a couple of really aggressive plays. His six or seven-- his points to start the 4th quarter really got us going. He had been struggling; he had some opportunities that didn't go down, and he just stayed in there and kept at it." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"I think during that fourth quarter Caron got us going offensively, and defensively we got stops. Once we got the lead we just executed down the stretch, offensively and defensively." -Jason Kidd

About the rebounding, in which Detroit had a large lead on Dallas until the final quarter . . .
"Well, we got beat to some balls. The guys in the huddle said, 'Hey, c'mon we gotta get those.' That's what happened to us in the Chicago game last time we were in here . . . Caron stuck his nose in there, Jet and Kidd were in there, scrapping for loose balls. We were changing defenses, and so everybody had to really pay attention to what was going on." -Coach Rick Carlisle

Regarding The UberMan -- 42 points on 13-23 shooting and 12 rebounds including five offensive . . .
"Dirk was great for us the whole game. Offensively he was putting the ball in the basket when the rest of us couldn't." -Jason Kidd

"With a veteran team, guys know where the hot hand is, and our guys understand that those are the guys we've got to find." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"When Dirk has the hot hand we're going to go with him, but I think the key stat for Dirk tonight was the 16 free throw attempts. When he gets to the line like that means he's not just settling for jumpers and he was aggressive and that opened up his jump shot more. I don't think he hit the rim on many shots tonight." -Jason Terry

"Overall my shot feels pretty good but I need to address my free throw shooting . . . I missed three tonight." -Dirk Nowitzki

Another side note, this one on Rodrigue Beaubois -- cleared for light workouts, return unknown . . .
"We definitely need somebody who can consistently get in the paint and make stuff easier and I think that's where we're waiting on Roddy Beaubois to make some stuff happen . . . we don't really have a guy that consistently gets in the paint and makes stuff easy. Hopefully Roddy will come back and open our offense up a little bit." -Dirk Nowitzki

About having to come from behind, especially in light of tomorrow night's game against the Thunder . . .
"We would have loved to get an easy win tonight and get some rest but sometimes you have to grind it out. We're going to have an unbelievable challenge tomorrow night at Oklahoma City." -Dirk Nowitzki

"We'll get through it. We're coming off two days of rest . . . We're going to have to jump out there, and be ready with all guns blazing in Oklahoma City." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"Oh they've got a good team . . . we got our hands full tomorrow night." -Jason Kidd
