Breaking: Roddy B To D-League (For PR Fun!)

The Mavericks are creating a however-temporary D-League monster up the road in Frisco: Not only is first-round rookie Dominique Jones heading to the Legends for tonight's Legends home debut, but he's got somebody riding shotgun up 75: Rodrigue Beaubois -- who will bring his "marketing presence'' to the event.

The Mavericks announced today that they have assigned guard Dominique Jones to the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League.

No surprise there. Jones (6-5, 215) was originally the 25th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, and while Dallas is high on him, the big club is too crowded to give him much time.

No, the surprise is that Roddy B is also heading to Frisco.

The Mavs are using the term "on assignment'' for Beaubois. ... and he's not expected to play this week for the minor-league club. Beaubois will be inactive due to a fractured left foot that has sidelined him for the early part of this season -- DallasBasketball.com reported last week that sources have him about three weeks from being healthy -- but he will be in attendance for the Legends home opener tonight at the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco.

The Legends will take on the Austin Toros. And in addition to DoJo as a drawing card ... and an assortment of other former first-round NBA picks on the roster (five guys, Joe Alexander, Rashad McCants, Antonio Daniels, Sean Williams and Reece Gaines) ... we're betting Roddy B is there to shake hands and kiss babies more than he is to get instructional work with Nancy Lieberman and staff.

UPDATE: "Kissing Babies'' belief confirmed. Mark Cuban just emailed with this note: this is a marketing support move for the legends with Roddy. Nothing more.
