STREAKWATCH: When Will The Mavs' Streak Peak?

Is "The Streak'' also "the peak''? Or can the Mavs keep climbing beyond 12 straight wins? Heck, what if Dallas doesn't lose the rest of this calendar year! The quest continues tonight, Bucks at Mavs … and that is where we begin our examination of the path ahead:

Dreamily, we look at the rest of the games in the calendar year 2010. If the Mavs were to win them all their record would be 27-4 and the streak would be at 20! Whee!

But that's very unlikely, given the stiffness of the competition.

Let's take a look at the game-by-game numbers (while always remembering that anything can happen and every game has to be played and chickens must be hatched and all that) … Starting with Milwaukee in town tonight:

On paper, tonight's game against Milwaukee favors Dallas in every single category.

Dallas' upcoming game against Portland also favors Dallas in every area and … on paper … should result in a Dallas win.

Again we find that Dallas' game against Phoenix favors the Mavs completely.

Therefore if everything goes according to the numbers (which we know does not always happen) then the Mavs should get to 15 straight wins. You don't have to bet on it … but know that Las Vegas would.

But it is then that things get very challenging for the Mavs. They head out on a three-game roadie with two games in Florida and one in Oklahoma City before heading back for two home games to finish out 2010.

How does Monday's Mavs-at-Miami game look, by the numbers?

Miami has been absolutely dominant at home with a +11.4 point differential. But the Mavs have been awesome on the road with a +7.4 point differential. This will come down to whether Miami's horrible 3-7 record against +0.500 teams is indicative of their ability to play against the big boys or whether it was part of early-season chemistry issues. This will be a huge game and could be a momentum stealer for either team.

Then comes a visit to Orlando.

Orlando has also been very dominant at home, but Orlando has been poor against good competition and has been mediocre in the last 10 games. This will be a battle but it seems that the Mavs should be favored to get out of Orlando with a win.

Now, a rematch with OKC.

OKC has been good at home and against good teams but their small +2.9 point differential shows that they have had many close games at home. The Mavs should ultimately be favored to pull this one out though it won't be easy.

Toronto should be a very easy victory for the Mavs on paper. There is nothing about the Raptors numbers that should pose a danger to the Mavs on their home court.

And in the final game of 2010 … the hated Spurs.

The final game of 2010 for the Mavs comes against their biggest rival and the team with the best record in the NBA. The Mavs have already won on San Antonio's court giving them one of their only three losses on the season. The Spurs however are a very, very good road team with a gaudy +8.1 point differential on the road. This will be a battle of attrition no matter what transpires in the 7 games leading up to this one. This however is as big a test as the Miami game on paper.

If we were betting men. …

The Mavs should get to 15 games in their win streak. What happens good in Miami and Orlando is gravy. And then the OKC and SA games have Western Conference impact … and even losses there will mean the Mavs have so-far splits with the powerhouses.

It's fun to look ahead. Easy, too, with the above as your handy guide. But none of it happens if the Mavs fail to get to 13 by failing to take the Bucks seriously tonight.
