Quoteboard: 'Another Streak Begins' - Caron

Give the Blazers credit. By crashing the offensive glass and using a zone defense Dallas had problems with all night, they made the game another fourth-quarter nail-nibbler. There's 2:59 left and the score's tied at 91. And then the Dallas defense manages stops, Dirk shakes off whatever, and the Mavs get their 20th win of the '10-'11 campaign with a 103-98 victory. Let's go be nosy. Quoteboard!

On the Mavericks as an ensemble act -- six players scored in double figures . . .
"This personnel that we have on this basketball club is second to none. We have so many guys -- perennial All-Stars, two Hall of Famers, guys that can step up on a major level on any given night. It's a lot of sacrifice and a lot of things going on, but we just gotta stay with it and we did a great job of doing that tonight." -Caron Butler

It's beginning to be worrisome -- Dallas went up by 17 in the third only to have Portland rally and tie the game . . .
"We had a big lead there again, and just hit a bad stretch again. We just couldn't get any stops."
-Dirk Nowitzki

"Right now that has kind of been the trend. We get up by 20 and then all of the sudden we find ourselves up only two or three points so we need to figure that out and understand as a team that once we have a team down we've got to keep them down." -Jason Kidd

"This is NBA basketball, it is the best basketball in the world and it is not going to be easy. You are going to have to fight for everything. Each possession is gonna be a challenge. Good teams are going to continue to attack." -Coach Rick Carlisle

Regarding Caron Butler, who scored 11 of his 23 points in the third quarter . . .
"Butler plays an aggressive game. He has no fear of big shots and big situations." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"Just continuing to be aggressive, Coach believing in me, having the opportunity to come in and close the game out, take advantage of that opportunity." -Caron Butler

About Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter . . .
"Down the stretch we were able to find ways to get Dirk the ball so he could sort of be the fulcrum of what was going on. He made good passes and he put the ball in the basket. He made some phenomenally tough shots against good defenders." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"The 4th quarter is all about making plays and Dirk made big plays tonight, made big shots down the stretch and one of those shots with LaMarcus really all over him . . . you know that guy is never out of the game." -Coach Nate McMillan

"Dirk made two really tough shots, that's what he does. We did our best to make the shots tough, but he still made them." -LaMarcus Aldridge

On getting back on track after Monday night's loss . . .
"We have six games at home during this stretch . . . had a little let down on Monday but the big thing was that we came right back with the W tonight and now we play a talented team in Phoenix on Friday." -Jason Kidd

"A streak ended and now a streak begins." -Caron Butler
