Tuesday's storyline is about Our Dirk, of course. He came into the night 10 points behind Larry Bird's record in points scored, and passed Bird about a minute into the final quarter by slapping down a trey. A magnificent achievement. More importantly the Mavericks, as a unit, scraped and battled and worked through mistakes and endured the attention of Dwight Howard And His Mighty Biceps and came out of Orlando with a 105-99 victory. Our guys sweep the Florida back-to-back and head home for five whole days of no games.
About the record, and Dirk's shattering of it . . .
"It's obviously an unbelievable accomplishment to a be a top-25 scorer in an amazing league with an amazing history, amazing players, so yeah, it's an unbelievable accomplishment." -Dirk Nowitzki
Reaction from the former holder . . .
"I just got a text message from Larry right as the game ended saying to congratulate Dirk and that he's always been a huge fan . . . I'm sure he's going to text Dirk and I'm sure that will be very meaningful for Dirk." -Coach Rick Carlisle
About sweeping the Florida back-to-back right before an extended break . . .
"It was an important game for us. We wanted to get momentum going into the break.'' -Coach Rick Carlisle
"It's huge. To come into Florida and win both games in 24 hours, that's a nice way to go into this break." -Jason Kidd
Regarding the Magic, who have three new players and haven't held a practice yet . . .
"We still know who they had. Dwight is their focus. They have a bunch of shooters, Jameer and all those guys." -Dirk Nowitzki
"None of those guys are shooting the ball very well right now. I don't know if it's being in a new situation or putting too much pressure on themselves. All three of them are struggling to shoot the ball." -Coach Stan van Gundy
On Dallas's extraordinary road record, 10-1 as of tonight . . .
"The big part of us playing on the road is that we feel a little bit more comfortable . . . as a veteran ballcub, we have kind of seen everything that an arena can throw at you, no matter if it's noise or being booed or whatever it may be." -Jason Kidd
"We feel like we're one of the best teams in the league, if not the best right now. We're playing great basketball, so we want to capitalize on every opportunity." -Caron Butler
The KIDDIRK Minute Watch -- Kidd played an average of 36 minutes on this roadtrip . . .
"In the big picture, we know there's going to be an occasional 37 or 38 minute night. We're always keeping these things in our mind and I don't see any scenario where on a consistent basis we'll be running his minutes up high.'' -Coach Rick Carlisle
The most complete Mavericks team ever?
"I love our depth. All that should go without saying. Our depth is quality at every position . . . Dirk's as great a player as there is in this league right now, but for us to go where we want to go, we have to give him a lot of support. Six guys in double figures is huge." -Coach Rick Carlisle
Don't tempt fate -- on the Magic's recent rough patch . . .
"It can't get any worse." -Dwight Howard
