Brewer on Board: Corey Brewer practiced with his teammates for the first time this morning at Dallas Mavericks shootaround and the new guy is already quite a popular dude. With the rest of the Mavs launching half-court shots after practice, Brewer didn't participate but he was definitely in amongst the bunch that were talking and clowning. His light attitude and positive outlook will fit in nicely with this Mavs bunch that values chemistry so much.
His excitement couldn't be contained and his smile was constant after practice.
"I'm happy to be on a winner," Brewer said while talking to the media for the first time. "And there's some nice weather here."
We'll see if he's singing the same tune after he experiences a Texas July, but we'd be smiling, too, if we escaped lowly Minnesota during the snowy winter.
Here's the rest of what the new guy had to say:
Coach Speak: The novelty of facing his old team may have worn off by now for coach Rick Carlisle, as this is the sixth time they will have met since he took the Mavs coaching job. Rick actually didn't even mention the subject once because every question was directed toward how he will use Corey Brewer in his first game.
"I don't know," Rick answered when asked if Brewer will play tonight. "Whether I feel if it's the best thing for the team. And if we get a defensive situation where he can help us, then we'll put him in there."
Fair enough. Anything else on Brewer, Coach?
"We think he's a good basketball player."
Here's the rest of Carlisle CoachSpeak:
Subtle Dirk: As is the norm for the Mavs, this morning's shootaround was followed by a team-wide half-court shooting contest. Dirk went first and calmly sunk his shot on the first try.
See if you can find his humble celebration:
"That's what I do!" Dirk boasted after doing some mutant form of the Sam Cassell crotch grab.
"That's a 35,000 dollar fine!" assistant coach Darrell Armstrong quickly reminded him (As Eddie House of the Miami Heat recently found out).
Dirk didn't sit on the throne alone for long though, as Jet swished his second shot to roaring approval from the rest of the team.
"Show him Jet! Show him Jet!" they yelled in support of their teammate. "Him" being Dirk.
Yep, the Dallas Mavericks Team Chemistry Lab is still roaring.
Breathe Easy MFFLs and Women of Dallas: Tyson Chandler was at the shootaround this morning. He even felt well enough to take some free throws and walk around without any noticeable limp. Don't worry, he even got in some jabs during the half court contest.
His timetable is still to miss two games, but it was great to see him walking without any problems and in amazing spirits.
Here's some bonus footage of him taking a few shots (basketball shots that is):
The Final Word: Corey Brewer is longer than you think. He looks 6-9 to us. He's long. And hungry.
"You always want to be a winner," Brewer said. "Once you taste winning, you want to keep winning. I haven't won since I got in the NBA. I'm happy to be on a winner."
