Name-Drop Donuts: Jet, Dirk, Cuban, Rick
DONUT 1: Mark Cuban, the Dallas Mavericks owner, on The Most Patriotic Thing You Can Do'':
"Bust your ass and get rich. Make a boatload of money. Pay your taxes. Lots of taxes. Hire people. Train people. Pay people. Spend money on rent, equipment, services. Pay more taxes. When you make a shitload of money. Do something positive with it. If you are smart enough to make it, you will be smart enough to know where to put it to work. I don't care what anyone says. Being rich is a good thing.''
DONUT 2: Dirk Nowitzki tells ESPN that he's still considering an overseas move ... but that now the lockout would have to move into November to push him to such a decision.
"I'm going to get away for a little bit and get some well-deserved rest that I didn't get before," Nowitzki said.
I know that conventional wisdom causes most to look at the story and see Nowitzki readying to pack. Maybe I'm just being a contrarian, but what I hear him saying is that he doesn't want to go ... and that he keeps putting it off as long as is possible.
DONUT 3: I've mentioned in this space before that anyone who thinks they "know'' NFL gambling must be either a) delusional or b) a bookie. I've used "The Sports Guy'' Bill Simmons as an example of someone who seems to think that because he's got a bank of TVs at his house, he is more knowledgeable than you are.
I don't mean to pick on Bill, but ...
Here are his "SuperContest Week 2 picks'' (I don't know what a "SuperContest'' is, but it sounds huge!): Buff -3, GB -9.5, Was -3.5, Cin +4, SD +7.
Results? Buffalo didn't cover. Green Bay didn't cover. Washington didn't cover. San Diego lost in a blowout. And the Bengals stayed within four, meaning Bill was one outta five on his "Super'' picks.
This is a lesson for you young kids at home: The moment you think you "know'' anything, the bookmaker's got you right where he wants you.
DONUT 4: Mavs coach Rick Carlisle is spending the day immersed in his community. A skilled pianist, Rick is going to play piano and talk arts today with the kids at W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy in Dallas.
Carlisle will visit with middle-school kids and also play on a nine-foot Steinway & Sons Concert Grand, courtesy of Steinway Hall Dallas.
DONUT 5: Kris and Kim in trouble already? I don't know if the wedding was a publicity stunt. But the rumors of marital strife after just weeks of bliss? That sounds made up, as if somebody is trying to promote a televised make-up kiss during a live broadcast of "Dancing With The Stars,'' say.

DONUT 8: Jason Terry is pitching in to a fund helping to seek the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the murder of Lorenzen Wright.
DONUT 9: Stay in touch with us and a few thousand of our closest Mavs-lovin' pals on Twitter!
DONUT 10: This LA Times story from Billy Hunter that Kobe Bryant has "interfaced with colleagues'' and is planning on providing loans to players in need ... is missing something.
Would these loans be interest-free? Am I a cynic to ask that question? Am I a jerk?
DONUT 11: Did we create a way for you to dress like a champion! YES. WE. DID.
DONUT 12: One more quality note from Steiny Mo's piece on Dirk: Nowitzki doesn't want to end up signing with a top German club because chosing one over another would be taken as a slight to the losing bidder. Which means Dirk ends up signing outside of Germany ... which once again, sounds like something he's not real fired up to do.
