Sunday Morning Mavs Donuts
DONUT 1: The Knicks, who along with the Lakers are on the verge of acquiring ... everybody ... don't really have the assets to steal Chris Paul from the Hornets.
So the NY Daily News has an idea: They should forget about getting an "All-Star point guard'' and instead grab "a championship-caliber player who actually is a free agent.''
They mean JJB.
"That's still my first option (signing with Dallas),'' Barea tells the paper. "I know other teams are interested. I just want to know where I'm going to be, but it's a business ... I always said the Knicks would be a great second option. I love the city. I love the way they're playing now, their style of play with D'Antoni, the players over there. We'll see.''
DONUT 2: But, what if CP3 ends up in New York and Dwight ends up in Brooklyn and the NBA ends up with just a handful of SuperTeams? As the NY Times notes, isn't that what the owners were fighting against in the lockout?
DONUT 3: To borrow from Chuck Cooperstein: If Barea is worth $5 mil and Tyson is worth $20 mil and Caron Butler is first in line for a face-to-face with the Bulls (that's allowed starting Monday) and all the big-market teams are getting all the good players from all the small-market teams ... what was the point of the labor dispute, the CBA argument and the missing of games again?
DONUT 4: Yes, yes, I said Tyson Chandler at $20 million a year. That's what he can make. That might be the figure he's eyeballing. But if I'm the Mavs and I'm having to give $20 mil a year to a center, I'm eyeballing Dwight Howard, right?

DONUT 6: Thursday, at Open Gym Day at the AAC, Jason Terry was asked what his goal was as the Dallas player rep as he attended negotiating meetings in New York.
"Make the deal right so we could bring our team back,'' Terry said. "Make it so we could sign Tyson and bring back J.J., DeShawn and Caron. That was my main thing.''
The collected media all but yelled "Hurrah!'' and maybe so do you. Except ... That isn't really the purpose of the union reps, is it? To vote in ways that help the 2011-12 edition of their respective teams ... and not the future ... and not the league as a whole?
DONUT 7: By the way, the thin turnout of Mavs players at the AAC in the opening moments is not at all reflective of team unity and all that. My understanding is that the Miami Heat had just three players show up in their first day. So it's no big deal.
But maybe it serves as a reminder to know that Jason Terry is the only player on the Mavs who actually lives in DFW full-time. It's a reminder that while the guys are good citizens, they are part-time citizens, employed to be here, devoted to Dallas at certain times but good-hearted mercenaries in other ways.

DONUT 11: Chris Bosh says it will "suck'' to be in his hometown of Dallas on Christmas to watch the Mavs raise their banner. He also says he spent no time in Big D over the summer because "I didn't even want to hear all the fans (bragging). It's funny,'' Bosh adds, "because there wasn't many Mavs fans when I was a kid.''
Oooooh, burn. What are we, Chris Bosh, in fifth grade?
