Tuesday Donuts: Mavs Media Day - LIVE!
DONUT 1 - MAVS MEDIA DAY LIVE at 10am: Come follow Fish and the Mavs on Twitter! The whole 75-Member Staff will be in the AAC basement with the team this morning and here's the four places to follow and the four buttons to push to get all the notes and quips and observations and photos and whatnot:
DONUT 2: Cap Space is Oil. Cap Space is Gold. Cap Space is your name in Sam Walton's will.
Cap Space is King.
Cap Space is King, so know this as you hear about Dallas being called about moving Rudy and Brewer: This has nothing to do with the Mavs' affinity for their skills. (Though I'm surprised that Corey isn't a better ballhandler and we all know Rudy is packin' drama.)
This is about handling money, Asset Management, simultaneously running a Plan B while also pursuing a Plan A.
Consider this: According to the way DB.com figures it, newcomer Lamar Odom can essentially be coming here on a one-year deal, if that's the way the Mavs want it. Yes, he's making $8.9 mil this year and yes it's a two-year contract, but get this: Only $2.4 million of LO's deal for 2012-13 is guaranteed. So our calculations indicate that Dallas could eventually strip itself of LO and allow itself $10 million in cap space next summer.
Meanwhile, they could conceivably use amnesty on Big Wood or 'Trix and get out of one of those commitments. Next thing you know, you've got all the Summer of 2012 cap space you need to do what the Mavs just did this weekend: Be a contender that reloads so it is a contender again.
It has far less to do with the talents of those involved, Brewer, Rudy, Odom, Marion, Haywood or whomever.
It has everything to do with Cap Space because Cap Space is King.
DONUT 3: If you are a Mavs follower, get wisely addicted enough to sign up for our 7-day free trial and Premium Mavs Fandom! Nobody does it like The 75-Member Staff of DB.com … insight and intensity and inside … as you'll see when you read about:
* The Mavs work their way to being one of three teams who can deal with Dwight
* One-on-one exclusive: The Loneliness of Roddy B
* The first days of training camp in CHAMP CAMP ... and inside reports from every single workout!
* The emotion of being a fan, and maybe a team member, that is "torn'' but also "together''
* Dirk speaks on his "Dream World''
* Chuck Cooperstein dissects the schedule and Mark Followill takes it apart bit-by-bit, too
* MAVS RUMOR CENTRAL ... All the action, has it happens, from deep inside Mavs HQ
*Odom is a Mav
*Delonte is a Mav
* And the roster takes Asset Management-driven shape if you understand the money and the motivation
*Man, are you (and Bill Simmons) getting snowed on the Chris Paul story
DONUT 4: The Mavs have Delonte West, Vince Carter and Lamar (Kardashian) Odom and if I want to retain the Mavs friendships I have, there go about 10 percent of the mean-spirited jokes I tell about what were opposing players. Next thing you know the Mavs will sign Deion, Favre and A-Rod and Donuts will be about as funny as Jay Leno.
DONUT 5: You want to specifically predict that Lamar Odom will not win a title in a Mavs uniform? That's what a mob of ESPN guys have done. But it lacks none of those fine writers' skills to predict an "anti'' when the start-out odds of such a thing happening are 1-in-30. Will the Houston Texans win the Super Bowl in 2018? I say no. Don't I pretty much have a 31-in-32 chance of being right?
DONUT 6: MavsLand is afire. (And not in a Rome-is-buring sort of you, you cynic, you.) DallasBasketball.com is one of the great successes in the history of FOXSports online, for 12 years still climbing ahead of the rest as one of the fastest-growing sports websites of any kind. DB.com Mavs Premium Memberships are expanding wildly. Sponsors are benefiting (visit ‘em by clicking on the lower left-hand column on the home page) and yeah, the t-shirts in the Mavs DB.com Store are as hot a commodity as they were in June, when YES. WE. DID. was a regionally unifying battle cry.
I thank you so much for your support of the site and of our sponsors!
DONUT 7: Left-handed 6-10 power forwards with nice mid-range jumpers? We're going to see alot of that this week, featuring Odom and Brandan Wright.
DONUT 8: What if, in a crunch-time moment, this year's Mavs opt to go SmallBall with an offensive lean, and focus on six very reliable offensive players? The six guys Rick could very possibly throw on the floor in closing moments:
Kidd and Dirk for certain. Probably Jet, too. And then choices involving Odom, Carter and Marion.
Average age of that sextet: 34.
DONUT 9: JJB to Minny, and they already have Ricky Rubio, so JJB would be projected as a backup? And Minny is paying him four years and $19 mil?
I'm happy for JJB. I'm equally happy Dallas didn't bother to try to keep up.
DONUT 10: Every practice, every note, every game, all the gossip, all the goods, every intricate detail a Mavs fan could want is in our Premium Mavs coverage. It's pennies a day to get All-Access to what the Mavs are doing upstairs, down in the basement, in the locker room and on the court – and it's free to come inside for a 7-day tryout. Now more than ever, there's no reason not to give it a go! Go Mavs and Go Premium!
DONUT 11: Hey, I'm here to serve in all Mavs ways, so here's some off-court Mavs scoop: I'm told that that Khloe & Kim TV show is absolutely rolling into Big D with Lamar & Khloe in search of a landing pad.
The top two choices: The W Hotel, which is next to the AAC. Very convenient, but maybe not private enough.
Or ... LaMarcus Aldridge's house in Las Colinas, on the golf course and near The Four Seasons. LaMarcus, the DFW kid and Blazers star, has a McMansion for sale in the gated community, which might be needed with the coming Odom/Kardashian/Mavs/TV frenzy.
And yes, this is the LaMarcus house that features an elevator.
DONUT 12: The Toy Drive for the Shawn Marion Foundation is from 7 to 11 p.m. Wednesday at The Fan Sports Lounge (2990 Olive Street near the AAC). 'Trix will accept unwrapped toys or donations for less fortunate families. And that's what's up.
DONUT 13: I'm working on a DB.com Get-Together for sometime soon. I know it's late notice ... But moving quickly and successfully is what the Dallas Mavericks do, right, so why can't we?
Especially if I can arrange for Mavs GM Donnie Nelson to co-host the Get-Together with me.
Stay tuned. ... and as always, check back with DB.com throughout the morning (especially at FishSports on Twitter starting at 10 a.m.), noon and night ... today is Mavs Media Day and the whole 75-Member Staff will be in the gym to bring you the action!
