Thursday Mavs Donuts: 'He Can Do That!'
DONUT 1: Bob Ortegel has taken way too much time off from being on TV. Oh, the travel with his sweetheart and the time with his daughters and the grandkids, that is precious stuff.
But Coach O belongs on television, talking about his Mavs as he has for 23 years. So he's back, joining our team as an in-studio FOX Sports Southwest analyst on our MAVS LIVE pregame and postgame shows.
"I had some opportunities to go in other directions,'' Ortegel tells me. "But my connection with the Dallas Mavericks is special to me. I'm looking forward to working alongside some terrifically talented people.''
I think he means studio host Dana Larson, play-by-play man Mark Followill and analysts Derek Harper and Skin more than he means me, but yes, I'll be back in the studio as well for all the away games (and in the AAC, of course, doing our DB.com and FOX Sports thing). Additionally, I'll be featured on FSSW's weekend "Mavs Insider'' shows along with Ali Dee and Ro Parrish.
I'll see you on TV ... and I am so happy that you'll be seeing Coach O on TV, too!
DONUT 2: Why did Vanessa stay with Kobe this long before filing for divorce, even after him descending from Alleged Rape Mountain in 2003? Well, in what state are they residing? And what are the rules about dividing assets in that state? A couple splits all assets if they've been wedded for 10 years, you say?
And when did the Bryants get married, 2001? And what year is it now?
Smart girl, this Vanessa.
DONUT 3: If you are a Mavs follower, get wisely addicted enough to sign up for our 7-day free trial and Premium Mavs Fandom! Nobody does it like The 75-Member Staff of DB.com … insight and intensity and inside … as you'll see when you read about:
* In-depth analysis of The Usual Suspects in the Dallas loss at OKC and a similar story, with tons of Mavs video, in the first exhibition loss.
* We 'Fish or Cut Bait' on ESPN's trashing of the Mavs' repeat chances
* Our Southwest Division preview including Dirk eating the big cheese
* Our Mavs Season Preview For Smart People

Coming up as Friday Morning Donuts: An exclusive visit with Scott Raab, the author of the controversial LeBron James takedown book, "The Whore of Akron.''
DONUT 4: You know about Peja retiring and thanking Mavs fans - and getting praise from title teammates like Dirk. He's no all-time great in Dallas, of course. But should Peja get his number retired in Sacto?
DONUT 5: The attention now given the Mavs is something we've all craved for years. R-E-S-P-E-C-T! But along with the strokes come the dolts, and one of the things I'll always remember about the combination of a) Mavs as attention-getters, b) Mavs in free agency and c) Christmas is watching ESPN's Skip Bayless explain to a world-wide audience how he liked the possibility of Tyson Chandler signing with Miami for the MLE.
I almost threw the file filled with all my detailed free agency research -- along with my Christmas tree -- through my TV screen.
DONUT 6: MavsLand is afire. (And not in a Rome-is-buring sort of you, you cynic, you.) DallasBasketball.com is one of the great successes in the history of FOXSports online, for 12 years still climbing ahead of the rest as one of the fastest-growing sports websites of any kind. DB.com Mavs Premium Memberships are expanding wildly. Sponsors are benefiting (visit ‘em by clicking on the lower left-hand column on the home page) and yeah, the t-shirts in the Mavs DB.com Store are as hot a commodity as they were in June, when YES. WE. DID. was a regionally unifying battle cry.
I thank you so much for your support of the site and of our sponsors!
DONUT 7: Under the guidelines of the new CBA, NBA players can be drug-tested twice during offseason for PEDs only.
The assumed result: Less-muscular potheads?!
DONUT 8: Come follow Fish and the Mavs on Twitter!
DONUT 9: Our Michael Dugat is attempting to calm our 0-2 preseason MavVirus by reminding that last year, Minnesota and Cleveland were each 6-2 and trudged on to having the worst records in the league, and combined to go 36-128.
Meanwhile, Dallas last preseason was 4-4 and the Heat went 3-4.
DONUT 10: Every practice, every note, every game, all the gossip, all the goods, every intricate detail a Mavs fan could want is in our Premium Mavs coverage. It's pennies a day to get All-Access to what the Mavs are doing upstairs, down in the basement, in the locker room and on the court – and it's free to come inside for a 7-day tryout. Now more than ever, there's no reason not to give it a go! Go Mavs and Go Premium!
DONUT 11: DeShawn Stevenson is going to the Nets for $2.5 mil on a one-year deal. Congrats to D-Steve and you play nice with Avery now!
DONUT 12: Yes, the Mavs are in demand and the schedule is itself full of demands. Dallas opponents this year had a .521 winning percentage last year, the third-highest on this year's NBA schedule.
"We probably have a harder schedule because we're the defending champs and the national TV wants to see us," Carlisle said. "It's going to have to make us better as a team."
Yes, the world is watching, starting on Christmas Day and then again on New Year's Day, and this sort of profile is what we've always said we wanted ... and we'll just have to deal with the fact that being this big a ship means baracles like Skip Bayless are going to attach themselves.
