Mavs Monday Donuts: Video, Lakers, Tyranny
DONUT 1: We mentioned a couple of days ago the Dallas Mavericks' plan to conduct their NBA championship-ring ceremony at the Jan. 25 home game against Minnesota.
How'd we know? Because that also happens to be DB.com Mavs Suite Night … a once-in-a-lifetime event that DallasBasketball.com is giving you the chance to attend … with a guest … and Premium Parking … with The 75-Member Staff … in a suite!
We're no dummies.
The game is against Minnesota so yes, J.J. Barea will be there to receive his championship ring. But more importantly to you, YOU can be there, too! A few simple steps (some of which you've probably already been wise enough to take):
* Friend the Mavs DB.com Facebook Page
*Be a member of DallasBasketball.com (sign up in the upper-right-hand corner of this page) and poke around DB.com Boards. Membership is free!
* Follow Fish on Twitter!
Once you've plugged in with Mavs information in those three ways, send me an email at Fish@DallasBasketball.com with the subject line, "FISH, I WANT IN ON DB.COM MAVS SUITE NIGHT!'' … and you are registered.
Marcia will draw the winner on Monday, Jan. 23, and we'll announce that name here on DallasBasketball.com. It's you and a guest, with Platinum Parking, in a suite on Ring Ceremony Night … and no purchase is necessary. (Although if you are looking for something sharp to wear, you do know where to look – in the Mavs DB.com Store!
Good luck. … and we'll see you in the suite on DB.com Mavs Suite Night!
DONUT 2: Donnie helps us learn languages, learn Yi Jianlian and learn Odom and learn Delonte:
By the way, as your Yi! News Headquarters (hello, China!), I must also report: When away from the court, Yi's favorite footwear is a pair of black Chuck Taylors with no laces.
DONUT 3: Premium reader Jay helps us out with a Lamar Odom concept – just in time for tonight's Mavs-at-Lakers 9:30 tip – with thoughts on "The Tyranny of Leadership.''
It's become clear to us that Odom is a thinking man. … and that's often the source of conflict in sports, because sometimes that coach wants you to run through that brick wall without stopping to wonder "why?'' Odom has now conducted, by my count, three (count ‘em, three!) mini-press conferences to offer his "exclusive story'' on how the tragic events of his summer caused him to consider retirement.
We've discussed the issue with him at length and broke the story – truly an "exclusive'' of how he's hesitant to "put all his eggs in one basket'' in ways we believe also have to do with Dallas' "3D Blueprint'' – the plan to add Dwight and Deron to team with Dirk.
"What's Really Bothering Lamar Odom'' is a Premium Mavs story; that level of coverage is available for pennies a day and comes with a free seven-day trial. "Dallas 3D Blueprint'' is free to read – and is a must-read for any Mavs fan who wants to understand this team's long-term plan.
That long-term plan doesn't necessarily include Lamar. He ultimately felt unwanted in LA and now? Well, he's slowly coming to grips with having to run through that wall without thinking about it.
There is a problem, of course, when the "blueprint" becomes public knowledge.
DONUT 4: There are consequences to having direction. When Player X realizes, "Hey, that's a plan that doesn't include me," they get distraught. Rick Carlisle's challenge is getting Odom (and others, as everyone on this team except Dirk is expendable if Dwight/Deron becomes a viable possibility) to understand that they cannot be bigger ‘n the program. That the organization's plan affects more than just one mopey athlete.
The Mavs have a plan. A team must have a plan. Its players much run through that wall.
That is the tyranny of leadership.
DONUT 4: DB.com cannot do our thing without the help of sponsors and partners like MavCowTickets, Esparza's Restaurant , Classic of Carrollton, Game Havens and McKinneyDentist.com . Give my guys a click, if you please!
DONUT 5: So one of the gossip-rag websites says Odom, Marion and West spent the evening before The White Visit at a D.C. strip club.
Our reaction: Well, there are some holes in the story. It says the Mavs had a game in D.C., which of course they did not. And we're not sure what West's travel schedule was that would allow him to be in Washington that same night, as he wasn't part of the traveling party that went to The White House. (Though Delonte is from the D.C. area, so he might've been in town and quite likely knows his way around the town's nightspots.)
But here's all I really care about in regard to this "scandal'': Did Odom, Marion and West do this together, as a team?
DONUT 6: I enjoyed my one-on-one visit with Yi Jianlian ... I'm not sure he fully understands me and I'm not sure I fully understand him, but he seems like a nice fellow ...
DONUT 7: I have The Eye Test at the AAC to tell me that the Mavs' Asian-American ticket-buying fanbase has increased greatly in the last few days.
There's another massive fanbase at the AAC now, too, though, and I have actual testimony from members of that fanbase as to why it exists: Especially on weekend games, groups of young women are buying tickets.
Why? They want to spot Khloe.
DONUT 8: Tonight and every night, follow the Mavs-Lakers game on Twitter with the Mavs Twitterverse!
DONUT 9: Read all about the Mavs' record-setting weekend here … and stay tuned as NBA scout Kyle Leath studies film and then presents his Advance Scouting Report on the Mavs-at-Lakers later today.
Also coming up today, a Mavnalysis on what's really driving the Mavs' terrific defense as they visit LA and LA – and it's a full eight of one thing greater than, and a full 12 of another thing less than, Tyson Chandler. ... it's key to controlling Kobe tonight and corralling CP3 on Wednesday and it's coming up!
DONUT 10: If you like this level of coverage of the World Champion Dallas Mavericks, try our Premium Mavs coverage! This is what we do, every day, with 28 years of experience on the beat! It's pennies a day to get All-Access to what the Mavs are doing upstairs, down in the basement, in the locker room and on the court – and it's free to come inside for a 7-day tryout. Now more than ever, there's no reason not to give it a go! Thanks for your support of the site at less than a dime-a-day! Go Mavs and Go Premium!
DONUT 11: Are the Mavs sexy?
DONUT 12: No TV for me tonight, but Dana Larson, Bob Ortegel and I will be on the tube together again on Wednesday night, starting at 9, for MAVS LIVE on Fox Sports Southwest before went hand it off to Followill and Harp for Mavs-at-Clippers. Be watching, be reading … and get registered to be a part of DB.com Mavs Suite Night!
