Mavs Donuts: Quoteboard From Denver

The Mavs are hopeful on the injury front with the Jasons, are beaming about what Rick calls 'terrific' work in Denver, and are aware that a scheduling turning point looms ... It's Quoteboard in Donuts:

PRE-DONUT: There's a thing ... you know, that thing that happens when the ball team's got a few days off and works together to play better ... oh yeah, practice. The Dallas Mavericks got some of that, and it paid off. Denver did their Denver thing; breaking, scrapping, scrambling, running the visitors until their thighs and lungs and brains explode. It's worked in the past but not Wednesday, as Dallas put together a lead it never lost. Good solid performance -- maybe the best overall of the year? -- and a good solid 105-95 win that vaults Dallas back into the top tier in the West standings.

DONUT 1: Jason Kidd almost ready? ...

"We'll see how I go (Thursday) in practice. Then, if I feel good, we'll give it a shot Friday. If not, there's no timetable right now. We just want to make sure I'm 100 percent before I come back ... I've been running, I've been cutting, I've been shooting. Everything is responding in a positive way. We're going in the right direction." -Jason Kidd

DONUT 2: Bad Guy Gameplan Execution Fail ...

"I'm not saying we had a bad defensive game, but three or four times we're scrambling and we leave Dirk Nowitzki wide open. I don't understand that, but when you're frustrated and playing in a bad stretch those things happen." -Coach George Karl

DONUT 3: Rumors of his demise are just plain dumb; about The UberMan's 25-point night ...

"An All-Star performance, didn't you think? He's getting back into a groove offensively and he's looking like his old self in terms of moving around the court. So, it's a lot of positives." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"I feel good, just more confident in everything, the movement, the shot and all-around game. I was fighting an uphill battle most of the season, for the first third of the season, but I feel good now. I have confidence in the leg strength again, I can make moves, I can spin and I can do all the stuff I need to do to get my shot off." -Dirk Nowitzki

DONUT 4: Oh no, not another one -- Jason Terry, hip injury ...

"He's got a hip flexor problem right now and he did not finish the game because of it. So he's got to get some treatment (Thursday) and we'll try to get him ready for Friday and Saturday. It's something that's been bothering him the last couple days and we'll monitor it." -Coach Rick Carlisle "The coach blacks out when he thinks somebody's injured. But no, I'm good. Just a little tight. It'll be all right." - Jason Terry

DONUT 5: Regarding any third-quarter letdown, and the (mostly) lack of it ...

"We talked about it, but we knew what needed to be done. It was just us putting our will on the game early in the third quarter." -Vince Carter "This game was about our approach and attitude. One of the big challenges tonight was to sustain our first-half effort and we did that. The second half was terrific and a lot of guys contributed." -Coach Rick Carlisle

DONUT 6: Welcome to a new DB.com Mavs partner ...

DONUT 7: Those 30 assists as a team -- we learn it in kindergarten; sharing is good ...

"It's definitely rewarding. We were able to get on track, played better basketball, team ball, and the ball was moving. We had a lot of assists tonight ... I enjoy it. You have somebody like Dirk, most of the time they're going to keep somebody close to him, and we have a lot of other guys and we trust each other." -Vince Carter

DONUT 8: "Be Ready'' as applied to Maverick centers ...

"That's part of the definition of their role is to be ready and, when called upon, they have to go in there and give us energy and rebounding and the things we ask our 5-men to do within our system ...

"It's a decision I've got to make but it doesn't mean Ian has fallen out of favor or anything like that. It just means Wright earned the opportunity the other night and played well enough to earn the opportunity to stay in the game ... Ian's a little more of a physical, banging type guy. Brandan plays above the rim better than anybody else on our team. He has some unique abilities that help us and so does Ian. Look, we've got to turn our center position into one of our strengths. And for a long stretch, it was. And I still believe it is. Those guys have got to be a three-headed monster for us." -Coach Rick Carlisle

DONUT 9: A thought on Brandan Wright's 10-point night specifically ...

"He's one of those guys that he play s residually off the other guys. We don't run plays for him, but he has a knack for being in the right place at the right time, and he got the ball in the basket two or three critical times." -Coach Rick Carlisle

DONUT 10: We're sadists, we like it when the bad guys pout ...

"The weight of losing is our locker room. I don't think we're playing bad basketball, I just don't think we're playing winning basketball. We're searching for confidence and confidence didn't come tonight in a lot of packages." -Coach George Karl

"We were down by eight and on our faces it looked like we were down by 20." -Rudy Fernandez

DONUT 11: Ahem. HINT, HINT.

"An All-Star performance, didn't you think?" -Coach Rick Carlisle on Dirk. (By the way, DB.com will have full coverage of the selection results tonight.)

DONUT 12: Looking into the future -- T'wolves, Clips, more Nuggets, Lakers, Knicks ...

"This next stretch of games until the All-Star break could be our defining moment in our season. You always look at a season and kind of map out what's going to be the moment, so to speak. And for us I believe it's now until the All-Star Game." -Jason Terry
