Mavs Quoteboard: Mining For Gold In Denver

A highlight of Mavs Quoteboard from Denver: The evaluation of Nuggets coach George Karl, who says of Dallas: 'They're a championship team, they have an attitude and they're getting ready for the playoffs.' Let's mine for some more gold ...

Less than a third of the games to go, and the race to the postseason is a tangled-up mess as usual. Right now the Dallas Mavericks sit poised with an opportunity to move up as they fight through the playoff-level competition the schedule's throwing at them. Beating the everloving snot out of the Nuggets -- on their own floor no less -- helps the cause a lot. From a confidence standpoint, from a team morale standpoint, and from a record standpoint; it could not have gone better. Dallas takes it 112-95 and now ownes the tiebreaker over Denver with a 3-1 series lead.

Quoteboard:

Wow, 33 assists on 45 made shots ...

"That's Mavericks basketball - everybody touching, everybody contributing." - Jason Terry

"For some reason we're really shooting the ball well, moving the ball. It's fun to play out there. When we were doubled, we passed it out and we made shots. It's a fun way to play if everybody touches it." -Dirk Nowitzki

"It was one of the smartest played games I've seen in the league all year long. Very disciplined, aggressive, but not frantic and moved the ball the way we had to." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"We shared the ball, moved the ball and got wide-open looks. There wasn't really too many forced shots." -Jason Kidd

"Sharing the ball and making plays. It's not about who scores. It's about making the right play and everybody has really bought into that." -Vince Carter

... including six from Dirk ...

"Dirk has been getting it and when teams have doubled he's done a great job of getting rid of the ball and trusting that we will make shots. That's a testament to his willingness to win, and that's what it's all about right now, him making the right play. And we're making plays for him to make things easier for him and each other." -Vince Carter

"I think it's gotten better, definitely over the 14 years. I think that comes with a little bit with experience. But I think I'm better when I shoot it - sometimes my passing decisions aren't the greatest." -Dirk Nowitzki

On dealing with Denver's standard game plan, i.e. run until someone dies ...

"We knew that we were going to have to be aggressive but extremely smart against these guys, because if you get into the frantic windshield wiper game, they'll put up 129 in a blink. It was all about making sure we had plays before we made them, keeping the ball moving and getting great shots." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"I thought at the beginning we traded baskets too much, but there in the third quarter I thought we held them to 37-38 percent shooting from the floor and that's more of what we wanted to do." -Dirk Nowitzki

One lucky break for Dallas -- no pun intended -- Denver's Danilo Gallinari hit his hand on the backboard contesting a shot and fractured his thumb ...

"I hit my thumb to the backboard. I was trying to block a shot. I tried to play through, but it was getting worse second by second. I didn't know it was broken, but it hurt a lot." -Danilo Gallinari

Regarding Rodrigue's ongoing development -- tonight he notched 14 points and dished 6 assists ...

"Beaubois had a slow start, but in the second half hit some big shots and had some really big plays for us." -Coach Rick Carlisle

What halftime slump? In the first three minutes of the second half, Dallas outscored Denver 9-2 ...

"My biggest disappointment was the beginning of the third quarter. They scored the first seven points and their confidence just ballooned." -Coach George Karl

About that tiebreaker ...

"It always helps. Right now, it's not about series wins, it is about getting wins and moving ourselves up the ladder." -Vince Carter

The UberMan -- he might miss but it's not because of anything you're doing ...

"That 1-foot fadeaway, nobody in the league can hit that and he makes it look so easy. You think you play great D, you contest the shot and he looks at you like, `That's going to go in every time.' As a rookie, wow." -Kenneth Faried

"He made some tough shots. I think the biggest issue was allowing him to get those trail 3-pointers. Those broke our backs. The other shots were typical of his game." -Aaron Afflalo

"Dirk was obviously great." -Coach Rick Carlisle

Good news on Marion; no structural problems with his injured knee ...

"He's been getting treatment, seems to be doing a little better. We'll see how he's doing later. We're not listing him as anything in particular. We're hoping he'll be doing even better." -Coach Rick Carlisle

The road ahead -- excepting Golden State, Sacramento, and Portland, it's all contenders the rest of the way ...

"They're a championship team, they have an attitude and they're getting ready for the playoffs." -Coach George Karl

"We've hit a strong stretch here, but there's no time to exhale during this stretch. And the games are gonna get harder and harder. I mean, the Lakers are in Wednesday and record-wise they're better than Denver. So, we've got our work cut out." -Coach Rick Carlisle
