Mavs Quoteboard: Dallas' Tornadic Storm

The Mavs Quote from the last 24 hours comes on Tuesday from Dirk, following the practice intended to mop up Monday's 94-75 Clippers mess. 'Tornados left and right in Dallas today,' The UberMan tweets. 'They wont let us leave the gym. Be safe everybody.' Well, good. As long as y'all are stuck there ... how about some more practice?

The Dallas Mavericks have turned a lot of corners this year. We all thought the Orlando game was an important one, a reclamation of the Maverick identity that made them thrive on impossible situations all last year. But for every corner turned, there's been a speed bump waiting. Last night's game against the Los Angeles Clippers wasn't a speed bump, it was a brick wall.

Quoteboard:

What in the name of Champ's fuzzy tail just happened?

"Tonight was a rough one out there. It was just like we couldn't get anything going on either end of the floor. It was like bringing a knife to a gun fight and you're going to lose when that happens so it was tough but we got another one on Wednesday." -Shawn Marion

"You don't plan to play like that. You get stops and you come down and play a very good segment of defense and then come down and have miss after miss, it will take a lot of momentum out of you. That was the story right there. We couldn't get in the flow offensively." -Delonte West

Don't sugarcoat it, fellas, tell us what you're really thinking ...

"I don't think we were very good. I mean, that was obvious. We weren't shooting the ball well and shot in the low thirties all night. We couldn't really score and at the other end we couldn't get any stops either. That's a bad combination." - Dirk Nowitzki

"I'm not big on judging it on one game after you've gone through a stretch where you've been winning and been doing some good things, but we got beat every quarter. We got beat in virtually every statistical category. I don't think you can play much worse. We can't just dismiss it like it's just a bad game ... When you stink, you stink and we've got to bounce back." -Coach Rick Carlisle

First quarter -- LAC 25 points on 11-21, DAL 17 points on 8-23 ...

"Well, we shot it well in the first quarter. I thought our engery was very good. I thought we had some very good ball movement, and we weren't just settling. I thought we did a good job driving some of their close outs and getting to the basket." -Coach Vinny del Negro

On yet another punishment on the boards ...

"I don't know, maybe I've got to play Haywood more, play our bigger guys more. Maybe that's part of it, but it's going to put you behind the eight ball without question because it's possessions of the ball and our turnovers are 13 – you could live with that. Rebounding was a problem." -Coach Rick Carlisle

Regarding the Clipper defense, which held the Mavs under thirty percent for the game ...

"We struggled. The first half we had a lot of good shots that didn't go in. Some of the problem was them; they've got big guys that cover the rim well." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"I just thought everything was too easy for them in the first half, getting whatever they wanted." -Dirk Nowitzki

"I thought we did a good job on the glass, limited them as much as possible, and really the transition where they feed off of was big for us, we controlled them there. They got some late, but overall that was the key for us." -Coach Vinny del Negro

"We just got stops defensively and got out in transition and got some easy buckets. That led to jump starting our offense for us." -Blake Griffin

Their offense wasn't too shabby either ...

"Our man-to-man defense wasn't there tonight and we were a step slow ... Eventually if you play zone for 24 minutes straight, the other team is going to find some openings. That's what the zone is going to give up, some shots here or there. Give them credit. They found them." -Dirk Nowitzki

Who is this guy? On Randy Foye and his 8 (!) made threes ...

"I was waiting for somebody to knock him down, do something. We just didn't do it, and really that's on me. If we're not aware and if we're not going to be physical with a guy that gets it going like that, then it's on the head coach." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"I think when a guy goes out there and gets three or four consecutive shots in the same spot, something's wrong. When you don't pick up on that after the first, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt after the second one. But when you get to the third and the fourth and he's getting the same shot, damn, something's [bleep] wrong." -Shawn Marion

"I don't know what the breakdown in the coverage was, but it wasn't to leave Foye open. He's been hot of late and obviously he continued that tonight." -Jason Terry

"Well he was just feeling it obviously. But, we got him in some rhythm. They went zone; they lost him a few times on that left wing; they load up so much on Chris and Blake. He hit a couple tough ones, they left him a couple times, but he just got into a rhythm. And when they were making runs he hit a three probably two or three times which kind of set them back." -Coach Vinny del Negro

"He works hard and he's been good for us all year. I know he had it on his mind the last time we came and played here, a lot of us did. For him to come out and perform that way is special." -Blake Griffin

"I was just being aggressive. That was my main thing was to just come out and be aggressive. They were cracking down on Blake when he was driving and it opened up lanes, and I was just feeling it ... Whatever the defense gave me I took. I was just knocking down shots." -Randy Foye

Not that it's an excuse -- Jason Kidd, inactive with a groin strain ...

"He's our best flow guy in terms of triggering it from the guard position, but look, we can do it with the other guys. We've just got to be better." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"Just got to get over it, have West step in, have Roddy give us something and just get over it somehow. But obviously Kidd is the head of the snake and he's going to be missed, his leadership out there, his decision-making obviously, giving the ball to the right guys at the right time, and that's definitely going to be missed." -Dirk Nowitzki

About the injury bug in general (Odom was also out with a tummy bug) ...

"Unfortunately, injuries and stuff like that has become part of Mavericks basketball this season. Nobody's going to feel sorry for us. At the end of the day we've got to find a way. It doesn't have to be pretty, we just have to get done." -Brendan Haywood

"It's one of those type of years. A lot of teams got a lot of guys out. You can't make that as an excuse. You've just got to keep chugging." - Brandan Wright

About soldiering onward ...

"We've got to work on it tomorrow and we've got to bounce back and be better. The thing is, we've got probably the most physical team [Memphis] in the league coming in here on Wednesday; that's rebounding and that's physical play, and we weren't good in that area tonight, so that's got to change." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"Yeah, I saw Memphis won tonight, Houston won. It's a tough stretch, so we've got our hands full ... we've got to make it happen somehow." -Dirk Nowitzki

In short ...

"Either we're going to get it right or we're not." - Shawn Marion
