Thursday Donuts: Mavs Combine, 'Daily Deron'
DONUT 1: The Underwear Olympics ...
Mavs suits Rick Carlisle, Donnie Nelson and Keith Grant have led the Dallas Mavericks personnel gang into Chicago for the Combine ... the submission of 30 names they want to interview submitted last night, the permission to visit with 18 of them, interviews conducted starting last night, and watching the Underwear Olympics today and Friday.
This isn't about actual basketball; it's drills and skills ... but everybody else on the other teams goes, so you gotta go ... and because Dallas picks at 17 this year, its highest spot since 2000, the pick is valuable and so is the information.
Who do the Mavs like? Who was on their interview list? Is there video on these guys? You bet. DallasBasketball.com has the scoop on six targeted players here for Premium Mavs fans.
DONUT 2: The Deron Daily ...
'Forgetaboutit41' coins the "Deron Daily'' phrase, my man David Teel has the video-game angle and the LA Times has the interview with Deron Williams, who clears up a trio of misconceptions.
DONUT 3: Deron Misconception A ...
He's gonna go to the Lakers!!
"I know they don't have any money to just go out and sign me," said Williams of the Lakers. "It'll have to be some kind of deal."
That doesn't rule out the possibility, of course. But the Nets reportedly would rather simply take the cap room rather than have such a blockbuster deal forced on them.
DONUT 4: Deron Misconception B ...
He needs Dwight on whatever team he moves to!!
Yahoo quoted a league source who reported that Williams' willingness to stay with New Jersey hinged on whether the Nets got Dwight. Previously, there was a report that he wouldn't come to Dallas unless the Mavs acquired him a young sidekick.
"I didn't say that. It's not how I feel," Williams said. "I don't think I'm going to base my decision, my family's decision on somebody else coming to a team or not. I have to make a decision that's best for me and my family. That's what I'm going to do."
DONUT 5: Deron Misconception C ...
He's somehow soured on the issues of "comfort,'' "a place to retire'' and "a place to raise a family.''
I want to go to a place where I feel like they will have a chance to build and build fast," Williams said. "I'm not really in the mood for being part of a rebuilding process. I'm getting older. I'm about to be 28. I want to win. I want to win now. Also, I want to live in a place where I want to live and my kids will enjoy living. That's pretty much it."
In fairness, Deron also said nice things about the excitement of the new Nets arena and about coach Avery Johnson, too.
The Times was asking the questions here, so we'll have to rely on its reporter's observations. Reporter Mike Medina apparently raised the subject of the Mavericks having cleared cap space for him and asked him about joining any team via sign-and-trade.
"I don't know," Williams said with a smile.
We're less than a month away from knowing who smiles last. Between now and then, expect many more "Deron Daily'' reports.
DONUT 6: The Margarita Capital of Texas! ...
When you're in the neighborhood -- and what a fun neighborhood it is! -- come see the gang at Esparza's in Grapevine! The Margarita Capital of Texas and proud partners of DB.com now celebrating its 27th anniversary!
DONUT 7: Harrison, Denzel or Clooney ...
They're making a movie about Jackie Robinson -- "42'' -- slated for an April 2013 release. That'll be the 66th anniversary of the great Dodger's major-league debut and I'm ready to buy a ticket now.
Why? First, because I assume in this day and age, they will find actors who actually know which hand to use to throw a ball (a longtime Hollywood failing.) Second, because Harrison Ford plays Branch Rickey.
And for me, make a serious movie and find a role for Ford, Denzel or Clooney, and you've got my nine bucks.
DONUT 8: Catch the Mavs and the DB.com Staff on Twitter! ...
DONUT 9: Congrats to the Thunder ...
And maybe now there is a Dallas-OKC rivalry, because now the Thunder has ascended to the level of the Mavs, Spurs and Lakers ... the last three West champs and the three teams OKC plowed through to get to this point.
Donnie Nelson said this Dallas team wasn't destined to beat OKC this season in the playoffs. And now, maybe nobody is.
DONUT 10: The truth about Nash ...
Lotta Steve Nash free agency stories floating around out there, and here's what you need to know as background to every serious-to-silly notion you read: There will be no "hometown discount,'' no "home-country discount'' and no "best-buddy discount.''
Nashie has one more chance to score big. Going through the divorce, a family to support, his very last contract, still playing at a very high level ... Steve's going to get paid. And something else: This is going to be a longer-term deal that some think. Longer-term and bigger money.
DONUT 11: Who needs tickets? ...
My guy Ryan at MavCowTickets knows the ins and outs of the Mavs, the Cowboys, the Rangers, the arenas, the opponents ... the works! For the most personal service in the business -- with no stupid add-on costs -- check him out and tell him The Fish sent you!
DONUT 12: The Final Word ...
Friend of the Mavs and DB.com "Flamethrower'' Pat Reeves is battling cancer. Please consider a donation -- no matter how big or small -- to help her with her visits for treatment.
