Friday Mavs Donuts: Billion-Dollar Ballers
DONUT 1: Billion-Dollar Ballers ...
The Dallas Mavericks have been valued at $765 million by Forbes magazine. That's a nice turnaround from when Mark Cuban purchased the franchise in 2000 for .....
But, Tony Cubes says, "They're way too low.''
It is Cuban's opinion that the Mavs are worth $1 billion ... and that the rest of the NBA's teams are on a similar price rack or at least on track to getting there.
So if somebody offered him $765 million today?
"I'd laugh at them," Cuban says. "I'd laugh.''
DONUT 2: Dirk for 3! ...
Dirk Nowitzki gave an interview to Sport1 in which he reiterated his commitment to Dallas, saying that he will do a new deal with the Mavs in the summer for two or three years.
In Dirk's own translated words:
"In the summer I will be free agent and likely extend the contract for two or three years. As long as the body supports me, it is still fun to play basketball. After the new contract I will be 38 or 39 and I will probably stop. For a few years it will work out all right."
And Dirk on his relationship with Cuban:
"It is clear that our relationship is amicable. We had so many ups and downs together. The championship was the best part. Mark has always supported me. Even when things were not going well, he has always told me: ‘You are and will remain my franchise player."
We've got more on the story, plus your DB.com Boards conversation, here.
DONUT 3: Where'd that Rondo story come from? ...
The New York Daily News has a habit of ... um, er, well, being creative when it comes to trade reports.
So it is with Rajon Rondo, the Celtics guard who the paper says "probably isn't going to accept a role in a rebuilding situation with a rookie coach, Brad Stevens. ... So look for Ainge to try to move him to the West, with Phoenix and Houston seen as two potential destinations. Dallas has always had interest in the four-time All-Star ...''
Where did the idea that Dallas was interested in Rondo come from? Here at DB.com, but it's an old tale and it was conversational in nature and to suggest it's somehow gearing up again ...
Well, this will take reporting, not regurgitation.
We're on it.
DONUT 4: Biggest TV in Texas! ...
We love Red Rock Bar & Grill, where the fellas from 105.3 The Fan recently hung out for live music, drink specials and that 200-inch screen! The boss, Barry, just got back from Toronto (where he of course attended that Mavs loss). He's a Mavs-lovin' son of a gun and we love his support of all we do! Come join us at Red Rock!
DONUT 5: Mavs at Nets ...
The Nets, up until recently, were the picture of dysfunction under old friend Jason Kidd. But suddenly 18-22 Brooklyn is among the hottest teams in the NBA -- and because the Nets are in the East, even that crummy record gives you a No. 7 seed.
To their credit, though, the Nets have won eight of their last nine, and in that streak have come successes against true West contenders OKC and Golden State.
The Mavs continue to bob around the eighth spot in the West and at 25-19 are hopefully not still reeling from yet another come-from-ahead loss (in Toronto on Wednesday). Dirk sat that one out and should therefore have fresh enough legs to lead Dallas out of a slump during which the Mavs aren't playing their best basketball right now have lost three of their last five games, including a loss in Toronto on Wednesday.
DB.com will have full coverage of the day and night in Brooklyn, including all the features here on DB.com Boards. Stay tuned!
DONUT 6: Join me in Frisco! ...
Fab Melo. P.J. Hairston. Melvin Ely. Devin Ebanks. Lots of Ricky Ledo.
The Texas Legends are both interesting and good, and I'd like to invite you to Frisco tonight and Saturday night for the games. I'll also handle the Channel 47 TV broadcasts of the games beginning at 7 alongside R.J. Choppy and would love you have you come say hello after getting your Legends tickets here.
DONUT 7: Air Canada ...
Should the Toronto Raptors retire Vince Carter's No. 15? Or hang a banner or something?
That was the talk of that town as the Mavs visited Toronto (and were very polite guests, unfortunately) and early in the game, Carter provided the locals a memory flashback.
Vince seemed flattered by the talk ... but not ready to address it.
"You guys are retiring me before I'm ready to retire," Carter said. "No, I'm not ready for that, yet."
DONUT 8: Soothed Sam ...
Center Samuel Dalembert will continue to fight through the discomfort of that bruised shoulder tonight in Brooklyn. Earlier in the week there was concern that it was a strain or worse.
Luckily, X-rays were negative.
"They just said it's a bruise and they saw the bruise, so I'm good,'' Dalembert said. "I can manage the pain.''
DONUT 9: Asik vs. Gortat ...
What is the Mavs' interest level in Asik? What is the interest level in Gortat? Who is the better value?
A terrific Premium conversation led by two brainy Mavs thinkers, David Lord and Michael Dugat, is here ... one of the hidden treats of being a subscriber for just a dime a day.
DONUT 10: Quoteboard ...
"Now it's time to let (incoming NBA commissioner) Adam (Silver) feel my wrath." - Mark Cuban.
Can we put this to a vote? Because while I know Mark is only half-kidding here, that means he's also half-serious.
DONUT 11: Deng Origins ...
It is being speculated nationally that Luol Deng will be a Summer-of-2014 Mavs free-agent target. One in-the-know media friend concedes that the origin of that speculation likely comes from this exclusive Deng/Mavs story on DB.com.
DONUT 12: The Final Word ...
Make "medical marijuana'' legal in the NFL, and then in the NBA and elsewhere?
I'm the farthest thing from an authority on illegal-drug use, and I'm too much of a square to feel comfortable advocating it. But when we examine what Portugal has done and ponder whether a financially-based "war on drugs'' is truly winnable, I'm interested in knowing more about whether treating pot as if it's a "forbidden fruit'' is an effective deterrent ... or whether we need to bother deterring at all.
