Donnie Donuts: Mavs Nelson Deadline Q-&-A

'We're always looking for ways to improve,' Mavs GM Donnie Nelson says. 'That being said, all the parts (on the present team) are pretty intricately intertwined. Also, to get, you gotta give. Right now we're not looking for reasons to change. If something presents itself, we'll look at it.' A Donnie Nelson Q-and-A in Donuts:

DONUT 1: Donnie Donuts ...

Dallas Mavericks GM Donnie Nelson is in the middle of phone-call exchanges as the trade deadline approaches (thoughts on what's cooking detailed here). He's also en route to New Orleans for All-Star Weekend ... site of even more talks.

But on the way, he takes a moment to visit with our guys "G-Bag Nation'' on 105.3 The Fan to share thoughts on the Mavs at the Break ...

DONUT 2: On Dirk as a champ ...

"He's going to play 'til he's 50,'' jokes Nelson. "No, obviously, we've stepped up big in last two offseasons with (Dirk being Dallas' second-best player) in mind. Dirk's transition as a player is focused on that.''

DONUT 3: On developing Monta ...

"Monta has been great, and where Rick (Carlisle) has taken him to a different level is on the defensive end. Monta was always able to get to the cup and always a force on offense. But it's attention to detail on defense -- knowing how important it is, as an individual and team defender. ...

"Rick, as a coach, ever since he's been in the league, makes a huge key out of defensive accountability. The turnover situation, in the past, left room for Monta's improvement. But Rick's put him in position to succeed there. …

"Rick's had a lot of success with Monta,'' Donnie says. "He's always my Coach of the Year.''

DONUT 4: On deadline philosophy ...

"We're always looking for ways to improve,'' Nelson says. "That being said, all the parts (in the present team) are pretty intricately intertwined. ... Also, to get, you gotta give. Right now we're not looking for reasons to change. If something presents itself, we'll look at it.''

"(But) we put a high emphasis on chemistry and believe it's the reason we've had some success here. At the end of the day, these guys eat, sleep and breathe with each other. It matters how you assemble a team and how the pieces fit.

"It's not like trading bubble-gum cards.''

DONUT 5: Hat-tip to Red Rock ...

Thanks to the gang at Red Rock Bar & Grill for having the fellas from 105.3 The Fan hanging out the other night! It's the biggest screen in Texas at 200", it's the live music, and Barry and the gang love their Mavs ... so that's on the big screen every night as well!

DONUT 6: On standing pat ...

"Champions can be built a lot of different ways,'' Nelson continues. "We won one two years ago because 11 guys fit together as the perfect team. That how we are thinking this year. Get in and get hot, anything can happen.''

DONUT 7: On GM relationships ...

"With Houston (for instance) we have a great relationship,'' Donnie says. "Daryl (Morey) is one of my closest friends in the league. But I don't have a bad relationship with any of the GMs in the league. Generally speaking, we're good guys.

"I'm probably the exception to the rule,'' he jokes.

DONUT 8: On Asset Management ...

"We've got Boston's pick, which will be at the very top of second and with the depth of the 2014 Draft, sometimes something like this can be as good as a first-round pick,'' he says. "We've got that one, and our own second, (if we want to trade) to move up. If it comes to that, not a bad thing.

"Mark (Cuban) is never opposed to us doing what we need to do to make the team better. So (the possible lack of a first-round pick) is not a situation we can't overcome.''

Oh, and Donnie on free agency: "Dallas is absolutely a free-agent draw. We like how we're positioned for the future there.''

DONUT 9: Join DB.com Boards! ...

Mavs conversation about ... well, everything? The best discussion forum in the NBA, The DB.com Boards, is in its 14th season and membership is free, fun ... oh, and sometimes frustrating! But mostly free and fun!

DONUT 10: On playoff goals ....

"Making the playoffs is part of our DNA,'' Nelson says. "Once in the last (decade-and-a-half) or whatever, we've missed. Last year was an out-of-body experience.

"This year, it's not just that we want to get in, but it's also that we want the best possible postseason success.''

DONUT 11: Estilo Gaúcho ...

Our friends at Estilo Gaúcho are original partners in support of the Texas Legends and in celebration of the excellence of their incredible and original restaurant, they've become partners with DallasBasketball.com, too.

DONUT 12: Being 31-21 ...

"Oh it's a good thing,'' Donnie says of the Mavs' sixth-place status. "We ended on a high note (with a signature win in Indy) and that's the thing we've got to capture, and know we can do it on a consistent basis. The boys are clicking. We've got the format in front of us with Rick's emphasis on defense. We'll get some rest (during All-Star Weekend) and then get back at it with the big boys (Heat at Mavs on Tuesday) after the break.''
