Source: Mavs + Seraphin + McGee + Issues
Sources tell DB.com that the Dallas Mavs are in pursuit of another center who might be superior to new acquisition Zaza Pachulia. But the net here is a wide one, and center Kevin Seraphin would be in it already, except ...
The Mavs want to pay him the veteran's minimum. And young Wizards free agent Seraphin was planning to get a raise from last year's $3.89 mil salary, not have to accept a start-over salary in a place where, in the end, he might be the third-stringer.
"He doesn't want to take the minimum (yet),'' says an NBA source of Seraphin's search for something better than Dallas' bid.
The Mavericks think Zaza Pachulia is a value, certainly because they gave up almost literally nothing for him in trade, and maybe, too, because of his quality as a backup center making about $5 mil a year. There is cap space left -- about $7 mil of it, even after Monday's evening's expected signing of waivers-cleared point guard Deron Williams is complete. And the Mavs would like to find a way to use that on an "above-the-rim'' center.
That's right: post-DeAndre Debacle, the Mavs are exploring another piece of a two-headed center, sources telling DB.com that this player's quality would make him more than just a Merry Minimum. So that's not the 6-10 Seraphin, who at 25 certainly has some skills and some potential after playing 15 minutes per game last year in Washington (6.6 points on 51.3 -percent shooting, with 3.3 boards per). The Frenchman was the 17th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft and has played all five of his NBA seasons with the Wiz and has also played some power foward ... neither well enough to remain solidly in Washington's plans.
Who is the other center Dallas is pursuing? You've seen The Usual Suspects list that includes Sam Dalembert and and Ryan Hollins and Javale McGee ... (and now some power forward names as well) but it could be someone who isn't a free agent, but who is rather available via trade. Who are the other teams interested in Seraphin? Wizards, Lakers, Suns and Spurs, supposedly, and whichever of them pays him more than the Merry Minimum will likely beat out Dallas for his services.
Is McGee a better answer than Seraphin? Is Dalembert? There are imperfections there ... and while we all want to put the DeAndre Debacle behind us, this search comes in the haunted shadows of that foolishness.
