Mavs Summer-Leaguers Register First Win
The 2015 NBA Summer League tournament opened up on Wednesday night with the 22-seeded Dallas Mavericks taking on the 11-seed Los Angeles Lakers. Dallas got off to a hot start, scoring 30 first-quarter points. The Mavs were able to find some semblance of offensive consistency and thanks to some great inside play by Jeremy Tyler, advanced to Round 2 of the tournament, beating the Lakers 88-86.
It wasn’t Dwight Powell, nor was it Justin Anderson (despite his big defensive stop) that led the Mavs to victory on Wednesday … it was Jeremy Tyler, who scored the game-winning layup on a put back with 1.4 seconds remaining in the game. Tyler scored 25 points and pulled down 11 rebounds en route to his second straight double-double.
Powell meanwhile, who had been the Mavs go-to guy up to this point, was relatively quite scoring 12 points and grabbing 9 rebounds on just four of 10 shooting. Powell obviously benefited from Tyler’s presence down low, but still struggled to find his shot for most of the game.
An NBA.com video recap is here. You can see more of the 6-10 Tyler, who has some experience in the NBA and overseas and is at least bidding for a Dallas camp invite in the fall.
Justin Anderson, who has been very up and down so far for Dallas, had an impressive game in his own right, scoring 16 points, and playing, for the most part, outstanding defense through out the game. It is performances like this one that Mavs fans were hoping to see out of Anderson when he was drafted with the 21st pick
Satnam Singh played four minutes and finished with one point and one rebound.
Heading into Thursday, the Mavs will take on the NBDL Select summer league team who are lead by Scotty Hopson and old Frisco friend Justin Dentmon. Dallas will look to ride its momentum into the matchup, and score a second straight victory.
