Any Dallas Mavericks list begins with Dirk Nowitzki ... unless it's a list of salaries, as I've compiled below for the 2015-16 season ... salaries and commitments and 20 candidates to go through the upcoming training camp:
A lot to gobble up there, I know. Some notes and details and explanations ...
Salary notes 2015-16 season
McGee - ** $250,000 guaranteed if waived before training camp (deadline 9/29/2015), $500,000 guaranteed if waived during training camp but before season begins (deadline 10/27/15), $750,000 guaranteed if waived after season starts but before the date in January after which all contracts are fully guaranteed
Powell - ** $0 guaranteed unless he is on the roster opening day of the season, after which contract is fully guaranteed
NDour - # 1st year salary for the odd amount of $1 over the minimum, which carries no ramifications other than the extra $1
Famous - ** $10,000 guaranteed if waived before the date in January after which all contracts are fully guaranteed
Ashley - ** $50,000 guaranteed if waived before the date in January after which all contracts are fully guaranteed
Wilson - ** $50,000 guaranteed if waived before the date in January after which all contracts are fully guaranteed; # 1st year salary for the odd amount of $1 over the minimum, which carries no ramifications other than the extra $1
Thoughts on the top end of the roster
#picknroll #stepback #arrowlifePosted by Wesley Matthews on Sunday, August 30, 2015
*I'm cautiously optimistic about Wes Matthews' views on his coming readiness, as he shows above (maybe) and has expressed in visits. I've been a skeptic all along, even at a salary far lower than this one. But I'm all about good news. Same goes for positive developments being suggested by Chandler Parsons' workouts, seen here.
*I think Fish has handled this fairly thoroughly, the latest case being bogus rumors about the Mavs and "Big Baby'' Davis. Dallas has its 20 guys. This is where we start.
*It is completely conceivable that Deron Williams experiences a bounceback year in what is a contract year ... and I like the idea of how he's suddenly flip-flopped from villain to hero. Entertaining.
Predominant thoughts on the bottom end of the roster
*I think the Mavs will have several youngsters on their opening-day roster, but still maybe far fewer than it looks at the moment. (Kids are more exciting now than they are when they actually have to play in NBA games!) The numbers crunch is going to be erasing at least five of the existing 20 names. But in any event there will still be a slew of kids left on the roster who need lots of development under the guidance of Rick Carlisle and staff.
I think the last three slots getting down to 15 will be:
1. Mejri vs McGee for third-string center. (I know McGee's "name'' merits higher expectations than that. But look at his contract -- again, really just $250,000 for now -- and you see what the Mavs truly believe here. (More of McGee's details, contractual and otherwise, are here.)
2 and 3: NDour, Powell, and Evans fighting for the two third-string forward slots.
And when that comes to pass? That's still two or three kids in that outcome, plus they still have Anderson and Jenkins to develop as well. So there is an infusion of youth coming ... but lining up -- financially and talent-wise -- far being the top of this 20-man roster.
