David West sprains ankle

A second preseason win was overshadowed by injury, which means Pacers will need to regroup without another leader.

The Indiana Pacers might be without 12th-year forward David West for an extended stretch.

While the Pacers were able to rally from a 13-point deficit to defeat Dallas 98-93 Saturday in a preseason game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, West exited with a right ankle sprain. Head coach Frank Vogel plans to use reserve Luis Scola while West is sidelined.

West, who scored 16 points, underwent a magnetic resonance imaging test Monday on the swollen ankle. He's hopeful the sprain won't prevent him from returning to the lineup for the regular-season opener Oct. 29 against Philadelphia at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Forward Chris Copeland made the most of a preseason start with a game-high 22 points, including six 3-pointers, against the Mavericks. Reserve guard Donald Sloan added 15, including 9-of-10 free throws.

The Pacers (2-3) have two more preseason games, both on the road, Tuesday at Minnesota and Thursday at Charlotte.
