Shayne Whittington in D-League for one day

Rookie center spends one day with Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

The Indiana Pacers wanted rookie center Shayne Whittington to get some playing time, so they sent him to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

The 6-10 rookie was assigned to the NBA Development League team Wednesday, played one game in which he scored five points and grabbed four rebounds, then returned to the team for Saturday's home game against Sacramento.

It’s a familiar move for young talent; the Pacers sent 2013 first-round draft choice Solomon Hill to Fort Wayne. Other young players have also had stints in Fort Wayne, where they can play regular minutes in games.

Whittington has been the last player off the Pacers’ bench. He has appeared on a limited basis in 13 games and has averaged two points and 1.2 rebounds per game.

He was undrafted out of Western Michigan and signed with the Pacers as a free agent on July 2, 2014.
