Watch Paul George practice

Pacers are encouraged by two-time All-Star's return Thursday, although he still has a long way to go to play.

Indiana Pacers two-time All-Star Paul George put his mended right leg through the paces of a first practice Thursday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

He glided through much of the workout that reporters were permitted to film, then said afterward he’s still hopeful for a return to the lineup later this month.

“He’s come a long way, but he’s got a long way to go still,” said Pacers coach Frank Vogel. “It’s just going to be a matter of increasing that activity.”

George, 24, broke two bones in his lower right leg during an Aug. 1 Team USA scrimmage at Las Vegas. Vogel and president Larry Bird have said they don’t expect him to be back this season, but George’s first official practice came three days ahead of schedule.

“It’s exciting to see him back out there,” Vogel said.
