WATCH: Larry Bird Presser On Coaching Change

Pacers president explains why Frank Vogel will not be retained.

Indiana Pacers president Larry Bird announced Thursday that head coach Frank Vogel won't be retained as head coach.

Vogel, 42, had led the Pacers to the playoffs in five of six seasons and had a regular-season record of 250-181 and playoff record of 31-30. He led the Pacers to the Eastern Conference finals in back-to-back seasons in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

Bird said it was a difficult decision because of his respect for Vogel as a coach, but is convinced players had stopped listening to the coach. Bird believes NBA players tune out coaches after about three years.

Bird appeared emotional at several times during the press conference, which lasted 24 minutes.

The search for a replacement will take time, Bird said, although the president is confident his phone will be ringing with interested applicants. Bird ruled out hiring former Boston Celtics teammate Kevin McHale because of their close friendship.
