#49ers next contract target: WR Michael Crabtree. There is progress. Hope is for a deal before the season. Otherwise shelved until after Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
Is Crabtree a No. 1 WR? Talent, yes. Injuries make it tough. He's willing to earn thru incentives top-end $$ rather than argue for that base Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
I do not believe defenses will agree. RT @Sixchr: @RapSheet Anquan Boldin is a #1 WR. Crabtree is a nice #2. I think most of us realized that Crabtree had a good chance of being the highest priority extension target, but I think the main news here is that there is actually progress. Also that he's willing to make it an incentives-based contract in large part. Like Kaepernick, it sounds like he's willing to sign a "team friendly" deal in that he'd bet on himself but, if he makes good, he earns top dollar. If he doesn't, the team isn't on the hook huge.
I would never have expected that Crabtree would be open to an extension (unless blown away by the offer) over hitting the open market nor would I have expected that he'd go for an incentives-laden deal. If the 49ers can get a deal that has a reasonable base, a lot of incentives and not a huge guarantee (again, akin to Kaepernick's deal), it has to be counted as a major coup for the franchise.
would be a good deal for both parties with money being based on incentives. actually surprised that crabtree is discussing an incentive laden contract, honestly figured him to be a problem when it came to a new contract.
No thanks on Iupati. I expect that he's going to want top tackle money and his pass protection has always been inconsistent. He's a very good run blocker generally, but without the consistent pass protection chops, I'd rather another team signed him to a big contract.
I'm excited about this news. c-tree is a stud and I'll be thrilled to lock him in when it does get done. he was playing like a top 10 WR before he got hurt prior to last season. he really can be a huge player for us and his best days are still ahead of him.
