This seems somewhat akin to the David Akers signing, in that they're going with an older kicker with a long, relatively reliable history. The main difference is that Akers was coming off one of his worst seasons while Dawson is coming off one of his best, in which he was selected to the Pro Bowl.
Also of possible relevance: 49ers' special teams coordinator Brad Seely knows him well from his days as a Browns coach.
Edit: Correction--2010 wasn't one of Akers' worst years, I just recollected talk that he was let go because the Eagles felt he was in decline. But his numbers were in line with his better years and he made the Pro Bowl
This guy is money. One of the top 5 kickers in all of football. Only question is how much longer he can do it. But there's plenty of precedent for kickers being effective in their late 30's and even early 40's. Love the move.
YES! The draft is deep with kickers and although I don't believe we'll run with two on the active roster the draftee will be joining our practice squad. I watched the Brown's reality show last year and Phil is a standout guy and very well respected plus he was clutch for the Brownies for 14 years. Solid pick up and a local fellow Texan, he went to a rival school of mines in Dallas.

The only problem I have with this guy is that he's too good. The team depends on him to make those long FG's and miss the opportunity to go for it on 4th and 1 and miss out on some td's. All that aside he's the best in any condition. He even kicked a 48 yd. in a blizzard.
I think if Dustin Hopkins is available in the 7th when the Niners pick, I think the Niners pull the trigger. Not sure if it would make sense to keep him on the PS. I'm sure with in the next few years there will be another solid K that comes along.
There is only one kickier that got a lot of fanfare that I remember is Sebastian Janikowski.
Dawson is 27 for 29 from 40+ the past 2 seasons while Akers was 9 for 19 this past season. Not sure what the $$$ look like but I am sure it is a reasonable one.
Edit: I believe I have repeated some of the same sentiments as others. I will learn to read first. 100 times on the blackboard!!!
i wanted a young kicker in hopkins to have as our 'franchise kicker' (has that term ever been used?! lol) but my goodness dawson is a great signing. he fits our environment and has the veteran experience to make all the big kicks in tough conditions.
looking forward to his consistency this season.....
Really really hate losing phil. Classy unbelievable kicker. He was a team leader even being a kicker. YoYou now dont have a problem at kicker you get him to the 35-40 and its good. I am so glad for him to get this chance with one of the best teams in the league. Will bow root for Sf and phil to win it all next year.
Firstly I am almost as sad as you, and maybe just as sad that you couldn't beat the Illegitimate Franchise from Baltiwhore in February...Kudos for at least trying
I was at the Browns Bills Blizzard game in 08 (i think) sitting right behind the goal post. We were covered in snow! I don't remember how much but it was BUTT cold (around 0) and the wind was friggin swirling...Cleveland Brown Stadium is a friggin nightmare to kick in. There was a ton of snow accumulation all over the field, and they had to call time outs to shovel the yard lines every 15 minutes or so. You couldn't see half way across the stadium!!! Phil kicked a 48 YARDER into the swirling wind from a slippery snow ridden footing and the dude is ICE FRIGGIN COLD DEAD EYE ACCURATE!
Kicking in your environment!? Tastycakes!
You have gotten the best kept kicking secret in the flipping NFL! You should be doing backflips....I was so pissed to see him go! Plus he will be kicking for another 5 plus years at least. I highly doubt you will draft a kicker. If you do, it will be a wasted pick, this guy will be kicking for you for at least five years, and his leg is gonna win you the Lombardi, mark my words...It will probably be against us (knowing our luck) Good luck to you...win one for Phil, he deserves it!
