Joe Nedney grounded by knee injury

An MRI reveals that 49ers veteran kicker Joe Nedney has a bone bruise and strained right knee. Receiver Jason Hill is released to free up a roster spot.

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to sign a kicker soon to fill in for veteran Joe Nedney, who has a bone bruise and strained right knee. Nedney is not expected to be available Sunday when the 49ers meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, the team brought in Shane Andrus, Swayze Waters and Garrett Lindholm on Tuesday to audition. One of those three is expected to be signed by Wednesday.

Nedney, who underwent an MRI on Tuesday, kicked two extra points and three field goals, including the game winner in overtime, to beat the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. But he said after the game that his right knee on his plant leg was sore. He said he suffered the injury on the opening kickoff and was unable to hit his remaining kickoffs at full speed.

To clear a roster spot, the team released wide receiver Jason Hill, a third-round pick in 2007. Hill caught 40 passes for 413 yards and four touchdowns in 34 games. He was cut at the end of training camp this year but was re-signed 11 days later. He dressed for just two games and did not catch a pass.
