Harbaugh hires could come soon

With David Shaw hired to succeed Jim Harbaugh at Stanford, expect the new 49ers coach to start naming members of his staff soon.

Now that Stanford University has hired a head coach, the San Francisco 49ers can be expected to start finalizing some hires for new coach Jim Harbaugh's staff.

David Shaw, Harbaugh's offensive coordinator at Stanford, was named the Cardinal's coach Thursday, clearing the way for Harbaugh to begin adding assistants to his staff.

Two Harbaugh assistants who were being considered to succeed him at Stanford, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and assistant head coach Greg Roman, could possibly be added to the 49ers staff.

Fangio has already been targeted as Harbaugh's defensive coordinator, according to CSN Bay Area. Roman, who coached tight ends and offensive tackles and managed the team's offense, is likely to be named offensive coordinator.

CSN Bay Area is also reporting that neither Fangio nor Roman will return to Stanford.

Fangio spent last season as Stanford's defensive coordinator after 24 previous years in the NFL, including stints with the Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints. He was defensive coordinator for 11 seasons, serving in that post with the Texans, Colts and Panthers.

Roman also has an NFL coaching background, working previously for the Ravens, Texans and Panthers over a span of 13 years.
