49ers name Gamble personnel chief

Tom Gamble will take over the 49ers' college and pro personnel departments, essentially assuming the role that GM Trent Baalke once held.

Tom Gamble, a veteran of 23 seasons in the NFL and the San Francisco 49ers director of pro personnel since 2005, has been promoted to director of player personnel, the team announced Friday.

Gamble is essentially taking over the job that general manager Trent Baalke held previously. Baalke, who was named GM on Jan. 4, had the title of vice president of player personnel.

"We are very fortunate to have a guy with the wide range of experience that Tom possesses," Baalke said in a statement issued by the team. "He's worked with some of the best in the business throughout his career and has been around football his entire life."

Gamble will oversee the Niners' college and pro personnel departments. In his previous role as director of pro personnel, he monitored every NFL roster with an emphasis on scouting talent of upcoming pro free agents while maintaining continuous depth of personnel on the 49ers roster. Early in 2010, he was assigned additional responsibilities in collegiate scouting, particularly regarding the preparation for that year's NFL draft.

Gamble's father, Harry Gamble, is a former general manager and president of the Philadelphia Eagles. Harry also served as head coach at the University of Pennsylvania and Lafayette College and later served as an assistant on coach Dick Vermeil's Eagles staff.

During his time in the NFL, Tom Gamble has helped build nine playoff teams – five with Indianapolis and four with Philadelphia. Prior to his arrival in San Francisco, he was a college scout for the Colts from 1998 through the 2005 draft, under veteran NFL executive Bill Polian.
