Harbaugh checks out TCU's Dalton

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh attends TCU's pro day to get a first-hand look at quarterback Andy Dalton. Does this mean he'll pass on Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert in the draft? Sure looks like it.

No one should be too surprised that San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh was spotted at TCU's pro day Friday, specifically to check out quarterback Andy Dalton. Gil Brandt of NFL.com said there appeared to be considerable interest in Dalton – also on hand to watch him throw were Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and Jacksonville OC Dirk Koetter.

Dalton, like Florida State QB Christian Ponder, can probably be picked up in the late first or early second round, making it even more likely the 49ers will pass on Cam Newton of Auburn and Blaine Gabbert of Missouri, despite what some analysts have written.

Matt Bowen of the National Football Post tweeted this: "Makes sense for Niners' Harbaugh to be at TCU pro day. Pro Style QBs (Dalton, Ponder, Stanzi, etc.) are a better fit than 1st round talent."

We haven't written about Ricky Stanzi of Iowa, but Ponder and Dalton certainly appear to be on Harbaugh's radar. He clearly believes he can find his quarterback after the first round.

Dalton (6-2¼, 210 pounds) was clearly the star of the day, throwing 50 balls that Brandt said were all catchable. He probably improved his status to a second-round pick.

Will there be competition for Dalton? Probably. As Brandt also noted, the Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots and Chicago Bears have set up private workouts with the TCU quarterback.
