Never let it be said the San Francisco 49ers aren't doing their homework when it comes to the NFL draft.
According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh and GM Trent Baalke will be in Reno on Friday to watch Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick in a private workout. The team will hold a pro day March 22, so this is actually a sneak peek for Harbaugh and Baalke.
Kaepernick is certainly on their radar, and for obvious reasons. He's big (6-5, 225), has a strong arm and logged some impressive stats this season for the Wolf Pack: 233 of 359 passing (64.9 percent), 3,022 yards, 21 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Reno finished with a 13-1 record.
Kaepernick is one of several QBs who are considered like second- or third-round picks. He improved his stock with a good performance in the Senior Bowl, and it's possible the 49ers are considering him along with Florida State's Christian Ponder and TCU's Andy Dalton. Ponder will have his pro day today.
We still think the 49ers will take Ponder if he's on the board, but Dalton and now Kaepernick are certainly options when Round 2 of the draft rolls around.
