What are the odds? Taking bets on Aldon Smith
By those who take bets on such things, at least.
Bodog.eu, an online sportsbook, came out with a list of NFL prop bets on Thursday, placing 12-1 odds on Smith to win 2011 NFL AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
At 21, Smith is the youngest player on the San Francisco roster. He has been impressive in both training camp and exhibition games this summer, but remains listed second on the team's depth chart at right outside linebacker entering Saturday night's game against the Houston Texans.
Smith, the No. 7 overall selection in this year's NFL draft, is battling incumbent veteran Parys Haralson in one of San Francisco's closest competitions this summer for a starting job. Regardless how that battle shakes out, Smith has earned himself a regular role in San Francisco's rotation of edge players on defense.
Smith's potential as a sackmaster no doubt puts him among Bodog's betting favorites. Three players drafted ahead of Smith this spring are among the favorites ahead of him.
Denver outside linebacker Von Miller, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 draft, is listed as Bodog's favorite to win top rookie honors, going off today as an 11-2 favorite among 21 rookie defenders listed by the site.
Arizona cornerback Patrick Peterson, the No. 5 overall pick of the first round, is listed at 6-1. Buffalo defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, the No. 3 overall selection, goes off at 15-2 odds, as does Detroit defensive tackle Nick Fairley, the No. 13 overall pick.
Denver safety Rahim Moore is the other player listed ahead of Smith, going off at 10-1 odds.
Bodog also posted 50-1 odds on Niners' running back Frank Gore to win the NFL's MVP award this season. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers is listed as an 11-2 favorite to win that trophy.
