Gore shuts it down, but not limping afterward
Gore twisted his knee in the first half, when he had all his carries, then was called off the field by running backs coach Tom Rathman when Gore went back out for the start of the third quarter with the offense.
"My coach told me to shut it down," Gore said. "I thought I wanted to go, but he told me to shut it down and I have to listen to the coach."
Head coach Jim Harbaugh said, "At halftime, he was working through something and we just decided we better go with Hunter and Dixon the rest of the way.
Kendall Hunter gained 40 yards on six carries in the second half, including a 17-yard burst into the end zone that put the 49ers ahead 27-13 with 12:21 to play in the game. Anthony Dixon added 10 yards rushing on two carries, including an 8-yard gain on a sweep left in the third quarter.
"It's big with my man Kendall coming in with a big play like that to get the game-winning touchdown," Gore said.
"We're a team," Hunter said. "I'm just one unit. Everybody does what they can."
Gore's season and career rushing totals remained the same at 782 and 7,196. His season average dropped from 4.9 yards per carry to 4.7.
Gore was not limping or showing any signs of injury after the game.
"I wish I could've contributed more to the team, but I'll be alright," Gore said, repeating the exact same answer two questions later.
Gore sprained his right ankle in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys while getting off to his slowest start as the team's starter. He sprained his left ankle last week during a win over the Washington Redskins, when Gore stretched his string of 100-yard rushing games to a franchise-record five in a row.
But that streak screeched to a halt Sunday as Gore finished with the lowest yardage total for a game in his career.
---- The 49ers improved to 8-1 for the first time since 1997 and recorded their first seven-game winning streak since 1997. The Niners improved their overall series record vs. the Giants to 18-17 and 11-7 at home.
---- San Francisco's defense has not allowed a rushing touchdown in 10 consecutive games dating back to last season, which is the third-longest streak in team history. The 49ers had a string of 13 games in 1985-1986 and 11 in 1992. They also had 10-game strings in 1995-1996 and 1997.
--- Brandon Jacobs was New York's leading rusher with 55 yards as the 49ers stretched their streak of not allowing a 100-yard rusher to 31 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL which is the fourth-longest in the league since 2000. The Baltimore Ravens have the longest streak at 39 in a row from 2006-2009.
---- The Niners maintained their No. 1 ranking in the league in rushing defense, allowing 73.2 yards per game.
---- Kicker David Akers had four field goals, including a 52-yarder that made him 5 for 5 beyond 50 yards this season, a new franchise record. Akers joined Cleveland's Phil Dawson (6 for 6) and Jacksonville's Josh Scobee (5 for 5) as the only kickers with at least four attempts to be perfect beyond 50 yards. Akers has now connected on 15 consecutive FGs, the 5th longest streak in franchise history. He made four field goals last week at Washington and finished the day vs. the Giants a perfect 4 for 4, marking the 4th time in his career and first since 11/21/10 vs. the Giants and 11/28/10 at Chicago that he made at least 4 FGs in back-to-back games.
---- Akers ranks t-1st in the NFL with 23 made FGs and ranks t-2nd in the NFL with 91 points on the season. Akers is on pace to record 162 points on the season, which would set a new franchise record (138 by Jerry Rice, 1987).
---- The Niners successfully executed an onside kick in the second quarter after TE Delanie Walker recovered the kick by Akers, marking the first time the team had recovered an onside kick since 12/23/07 vs. Tampa Bay (K Joe Nedney kick recovered by TE Delanie Walker).
---- QB Alex Smith tossed his 11th touchdown of the season and 62nd of his career on a 31-yd. catch and run to TE Vernon Davis. The TD reception by Davis ranks him t-1st in franchise history for the most TD receptions among TEs with Brent Jones with 33 career TDs. Smith led the 49ers on another fourth quarter come-from-behind victory vs. the Giants after trailing 13-12 at the start of the 4th qtr. It marks his fourth 4th qtr. come-from-behind victory this season, which ranks t-1st in the NFL with Giants QB Eli Manning.
---- The Niners went for two after the TD, converting it to WR Michael Crabtree. The 2-pt. conversion was Crabtree's first and the first for the 49ers since 9/20/10 vs. New Orleans.
---- CB Carlos Rogers recorded 2 interceptions on the day. He posted his 4th INT of the season in the 2nd qtr., and later picked off QB Eli Manning in the 4th qtr. to register his first career multi-pick game. Rogers now ranks t-1st in the NFL with 5 interceptions. The 2 INTs by Rogers marked the first time a Niner has registered 2 INTs in the same game since CB Walt Harris on 11/25/07 at Arizona.
---- LB Patrick Willis registered his 2nd sack of the season and 17th of his career after bringing down Giants QB Eli Manning in the 3rd qtr. Willis also had 11 tackles as inside linebackers Willis and NaVorro Bowman combined for 25 tackles.
--- 49ers defenders got their hands on six more passes Sunday to stretch their season total to 66, which leads the NFL.
