49ers Sign Seneca Wallace

The San Francisco 49ers added veteran quarterback Seneca Wallace Thursday in an effort to provide more depth to the backup quarterback battle behind Colin Kaepernick. Receiver Ricardo Lockette was released to make room on the 90-man roster.

Aside from one drive late in the win over Kansas City, the San Francisco 49ers have not seen much to be encouraged about from their backup quarterbacks this preseason. To add depth to the competition, the team added veteran Seneca Wallace, it announced Thursday morning.

Wednesday CSN Bay Area had reported the 49ers' initial interest in Wallace, who has ties with senior offensive assistant Eric Mangini, who was Wallace's head coach with the Cleveland Browns in 2010.

To make room on the roster the team released Ricardo Lockette, Kaepernick's roommate and confidant.

Reserve quarterback B.J. Daniels authored the game-winning, 90-yard touchdown drive to give the 49ers a 15-13 win over the Chiefs in Week 2 of the preseason. His 14-yard pass to Chuck Jacobs was the team's only touchdown so far.

Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien have combined for a 41.44 QB rating in the first two games while throwing three interceptions.

Wallace brings with him seven years on NFL experience. He has made 62 appearances and teams are 6-15 in his starts. The Iowa State alum has completed 59.2 percent of his passes and thrown 31 touchdowns to 18 interceptions.

His most productive season came for the Seahawks in 2008 when he made eight starts, throwing for 1,532 yards and 11 scores. He was forced into action after starter Matt Hasselbeck was sidelined with a bulging disk in his back and a sore right knee.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh said that Daniels would get the same number of reps as McCoy and Tolzien this week, indicating the competition for the No. 2 job was still in the air prior to Wallace's signing. But he did say he expected McCoy to be the first quarterback in the game following Kaepernick Sunday against the Vikings.

Daniels appears to have a grip on either the third quarterback job or a place on the practice squad, leaving McCoy, Tolzien and Wallace to compete for spots on the roster.
