Mailbag Pt. 2: Why not trade into 2015 draft?

Why didn't the 49ers use their assets to trade in next year's draft? Who is your favorite draft pick? Can Chris Borland jump Michael Wilhoite on the depth chart? These questions and more get answered in Part 2 of our post-draft Twitter mailbag.

Here's part two of our post-draft mail bag. You can find the first installment here.

As always, these questions came from my fine Twitter followers.

I asked Trent Baalke the exact same thing Saturday after the draft's completion. Here's how the back and fourth went.

Me: You guys had a roster obviously that went to the conference title game and with 11 picks, conventional wisdom would think you'd use some of those picks to make some moves in next year's draft. Why not do that?

Baalke: "Conventional is not fun."

Me: Is that a testament to the overall depth of this class I guess is the better question?

Baalke: "Once again, as we said, in order to make trades you have to have trading partners. And, sometimes you're able to do it and sometimes you're not. And then there's other trades that just don't make sense that people would be willing to do and do with you, but you've got to give up too much to do it. We're firm believers that the roster can't be 20-deep or 25-deep or even 45-deep, it's got to be 53-deep. And we try to build the strongest 53-man roster that we can. And in order to do that you have to have good football players, you can never have enough of them. Because, if you have 63 of them competing for 53 spots, it makes those 53 that earn them that much better and that's the goal."

Here's my interpretation: when Baalke said there were "other trades that just don't make make sense," it leads back to the idea that this was one of the deepest draft classes in years. Usually when teams trade for future picks they're able to get better value. But that value was offset by depth in this year's class. Teams likely wanted to stay in this year's draft because the next draft is always a question mark.

Considering the players the 49ers landed with their picks in the first five rounds, it's easy to see why they didn't trade out of more picks in this draft. All of their selections were very good values and some were steals in certain spots. An argument can be made that Carlos Hyde, Marcus Martin, Chris Borland, Brandon Thomas, Bruce Ellington and Dontae Johnson all went a round later than they could have in another draft that wasn't so deep.

It's worth noting San Francisco did land an extra fourth-round pick in next year's draft as a product of moving back from 56 to 57 to take Hyde.

Answering the second part of your question, good teams do everything they can to add as much talent as possible, even if they aren't addressing any needs with their selections. Do the 49ers need another fullback? No, but they found Trey Millard in the seventh round, who many believe was the best fullback in the class. He's coming off an ACL, so he could be stashed on a reserve list for the entire season and provide depth later. He's a better prospect than Bruce Miller was when he got taken with a seventh-round pick.

Each draft pick's fate will come down to training camp. And while it's easy to say a number of these guys will get cut, you could also argue a number of reserves/practice squad players are more likely to be looking for jobs elsewhere than some of these incoming rookies.

Thanks for this chance to be subjective! They come few and far between.

As a graduate of The Ohio State University, the easy answer would be Hyde, who had a huge year in 2013. He had 1,668 yards from scrimmage and 18 touchdowns in just 11 games for the Buckeyes. He's a great fit for the 49ers' offense.

But my favorite pick of the draft would have to be Bruce Ellington in the fourth round. The more tape I watched leading into the draft the more I was convinced any team that landed him would be thrilled. To me he was a second or third-round talent. He's uber-athletic and ultra-competitive. If two or three inches taller he would have been one of the first receivers taken.

From a production standpoint, the thing that sticks out to me about Ellington is how he averaged nearly 16 yards per reception while working almost exclusively in the slot at South Carolina in 2013. That tells me that he's far more than just a dink-and-dunk type receiver.

What makes him a great fit for the 49ers is the potential fits he could give secondaries alongside Vernon Davis. San Francisco hasn't had a legitimate slot weapon since Davis joined the team in 2006. If Ellington can become the weapon the team hopes he will, the 49ers could line him up on the same side as Davis to help him get open over the middle of the field, and vice versa.

This wouldn't surprise me at all. The 49ers really like Wilhoite, but Borland was a special player at Wisconsin despite not having elite measurables. This video - particularly the second play at the goal line - is just an example of his level of dominance in college. Keep in mind Borland was taken a round later than Hyde in the draft.

I would expect a very heated battle between Borland and Wilhoite in training camp. It's the classic case of overachieving undrafted player vs. highly drafted player.

Once Carradine finally began practicing the media wasn't allowed to watch anything beyond individual drills, so we really had no gauge on his progress. But it became clear the coaching staff wasn't very impressed, which makes sense in hindsight after knowing he needed surgery after the season to get rid of scar tissue in the same knee he injured in college.

Heading into the draft, I believed the 49ers would use one of their "luxury" picks to find another defensive lineman in the early rounds, perhaps with the third-round pick they used on Thomas. But instead they waited until the seventh to grab Kaleb Ramsey, who carries significant health concerns.

In my opinion, that bodes very well for how the team views Carradine. Because if they had serious concerns about his ability to come back off the knee injury, there's no doubt in my mind they would have used an early pick to address the position (see Lattimore, Marcus and Hyde, Carlos).

Carradine will have a shot at earning a significant number of snaps this season. There isn't a ton of tread left on Justin Smith and Ray McDonald's tires - who saw significantly fewer snaps last in 2013 than previous years (although McDonald was dealing a number of nagging injuries). It's definitely reasonable to expect Carradine to get 20 snaps a game - which was roughly what Tony Jerod-Eddie received last season.

Jewel Hampton.

Why? The 49ers will rely heavily on the running game in the regular season and won't want to use their bullets in the preseason. Hyde and Lattimore will get a few carries here and there to get used to the pro game, but the team will do everything they can to limit the hits they take - especially Lattimore's. Hampton is a practice squad player and like or not, one of the most important parts of his job is to take the bulk of the carries in the preseason.

Last year Hampton got 38 carries in the four preseason games while LaMichael James received 23 and Anthony Dixon got 19. It's clear that when it comes to running backs, the 49ers prefer practice reps to preseason snaps. Plus they never like to give their future opponents anything to use against them on film.
