In addition to the release of veteran defensive lineman Junior Bryant, the 49ers waived seven players on Monday.

Offensive tackle Tom Ashworth, punter Stephen Cheek, cornerback Stephen Fisher, wide receiver Grant Heard, running back Saladin McCullough, safety Brian Smith and fullback Josh White all were released as the Niners trimmed their roster to get in accordance with the NFL's Tuesday deadline for a 65-man limit.

Heard may have been the biggest surprise. The rangy rookie - the all-time leading receiver in University of Mississippi history - had an eye-popping debut with five catches for 84 yards in the Niners' preseason opener against San Diego. But he didn't catch another preseason pass and apparently didn't figure in the team's plans.
