SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After seeing a neurologist earlier in the week, Eric Reid has been ruled out of Sunday's season finale against the Arizona Cardinals after sustaining a concussion in last week's overtime loss to the San Diego Chargers.
It was Reid's third concussion in two seasons. Sunday's game will be Reid's first missed start since being drafted in first round of last year's draft.
“He’s doing good," head coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday. "He practiced today, but it doesn’t look like he’s going to make the ball game.”
After skipping practice until Friday, Reid was a limited participant in Friday's session, sporting a blue no-contact jersey. Craig Dahl will start at free safety Sunday, next to Antoine Bethea, who was voted as the team's MVP by the coaching staff earlier in the week.
The team's third safety becomes L.J. McCray, who has notched six special teams tackles on the season. McCray, an undrafted rookie out of Catawba College, has played seven defensive snaps this season.
“He’s progressed," Harbaugh said. "Seen him in the last couple of ball games making plays and making tackles and he’s come a long way and continues that growth, so it’s been good.”
Cornerback Tramaine Brock, who hasn't appeared in a game since Nov. 9's win in New Orleans, is listed as questionable for Sunday's game with a hamstring injury. Brock has played in just three games this season, after coming into the year as the No. 1 corner following a four-year, $16 million extension he signed last season.
Linebacker Ahmad Brooks (thumb), returned to practice this week and is also listed as questionable. After sustaining a shoulder injury in last week's loss, cornerback Perrish Cox did not practice this week, and is questionable.
Rookie return man Bruce Ellington is also questionable after suffering a hamstring injury last week. Friday, the 49ers signed return man Trindon Holliday, who is likely to handle kick and punt return duties Sunday.
