49ers mailbag: offseason edition

Opening up the Twitter Mailbag to answer some key questions midway through the 49ers' offseason.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 49ers’ turbulent offseason is reaching its midway point this weekend with the opening of the team’s rookie minicamp. For the first time, new head coach Jim Tomsula and his staff will be able to get their hands on 10 draftees, nine undrafted free agents and a slew of others trying out for a chance to latch on somewhere in the NFL.

General manager Trent Baalke’s team is largely assembled, after making his moves in free agency and the draft, with the club looking forward to June’s mandatory OTAs before training camps kicks off at the end of July.

With key cogs like Frank Gore, Patrick Willis, Chris Borland, Justin Smith (?), Ray McDonald, Mike Iupati and Michael Crabtree all gone from the team, there are plenty of questions the 49ers have to answer.

Let’s take a look at the Twitter mailbag. As always, you can follow me on Twitter @ChrisBiderman.

The 49ers have struggled to find a consistent No. 3 receiver since Mario Manningham sustained his ACL tear late in the 2012 season playing behind Michael Crabtree and Randy Moss. Since then, that role has been filled mostly by committee, with a slew of receivers getting their shots, depending on former offensive coordinator Greg Roman’s game plan week to week.

Last year, Stevie Johnson and Brandon Lloyd rotated in and out of the lineup, with rookie Bruce Ellington also getting some looks. I’d expect Ellington’s role to get expanded this year with the departures of Lloyd and Johnson. Ellington came on strong late last season after Johnson was sidelined with a knee injury, scoring rushing and receiving touchdowns in Week 15’s loss to San Diego.

Ellington is a classic slot receiver, which is something the 49ers have been looking for over the last few seasons outside of Anquan Boldin. And given they added a downfield threat in Torrey Smith this offseason, Ellington would appear to be a better compliment to that starting duo.

The other candidates are Jerome Simpson and Quinton Patton. The sample size for Patton has been so small - he’s appeared in just 10 games over two seasons, with just 13 targets - that defining his style as a receiver remains a work in progress. He did most of his work on the outside as a rookie, making some key catches along the boundary. Simpson is a classic downfield threat, who could be brought in as a decoy preventing defenses from stacking the line of scrimmage to stop the run.

If I had to guess, I would say there would be a rotation between Ellington, Simpson and Patton, with Ellington getting the most work of that trio. One player worth keeping on eye on is undrafted free agent Dres Anderson out of Utah, who might have gone in the fourth of fifth round of the draft had he not suffered a torn meniscus midway through his senior season. Anderson averaged 18.9 yards per catch as a junior with seven touchdowns. Think of Anderson as a poor man’s Devin Smith, the Ohio State receiver who went in the second round to the New York Jets.

Rookie DeAndre Smelter, taken in the fourth-round out of Georgia Tech, is likely to begin the season on the non-football injury list, keeping him sidelined for at least the first six weeks of the season.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the offseason was the 49ers not making a major investment at inside linebacker after losing Willis and Borland to retirement. None of their 10 draft draft picks were inside linebackers, which speaks to the team’s comfort in Michael Wilhoite, Nick Moody, Nick Bellore, Shayne Skov, Desmond Bishop and Philip Wheeler.

After starting all 16 games last season, the 49ers appear content to have Wilhoite in the starting lineup playing the ‘Jack’ position next to NaVorro Bowman, who will back to playing ‘Mike’. Wilhoite was solid last season while dealing with the loss of Willis next to him, and later the loss of Borland, who dealt with an ankle injury late in the year.

Like many position groups, the competition at inside linebacker is shaping up to be very competitive this summer. Right now it looks like Wheeler, Moody and Bellore have the leg up on the rest of the candidates if the 49ers elect to keep five inside linebackers. But that’s far from set in stone. Wheeler has experience, Moody has the athleticism and upside, while Bellore has the track record on special teams. But strong camps from Bishop and Skov could complicate things.

If I had to pick one to unseat Wilhoite, it would be Moody, who is the second most athletic player of the group (behind Bowman). But it would be a pretty sizable upset if he took Wilhoite's spot in the starting lineup.

Last year, San Francisco kept four inside linebackers on the 53-man roster for the majority of the season.

The answer to these questions usually involves following the money. For the 49ers, the most likely veteran to lose his job is outside Ahmad Brooks, who was a surprise to remain with the team this offseason given his $6 million base salary and being sidelined for most of two games for disciplinary reasons in 2014.

Brooks didn’t come into training camp in shape last season and had a down year, for his standards, after two straight second-team All-Pro selections the previous two seasons. And with the emergence of former fifth-round pick Aaron Lynch, Brooks’ successor opposite Aldon Smith might already be in place. Then there’s Corey Lemonier and Eli Harold, outside linebackers who were both third round picks in 2013 and 2015, respectively.

Baalke has backed Brooks this offseason, indicating he believes Brooks can return to the player he was two years ago. But the three factors for his eventual release are in place: high salary, declining production, and other candidates ready to contribute.

Other veterans to consider: safety Craig Dahl, interior offensive lineman Joe Looney, and quarterback Blaine Gabbert. Dahl will be in direct competition with second-round pick Jaquiski Tartt. Looney will be competing at a crowded group on the inside with Brandon Thomas, Marcus Martin, Erik Pears and others. Gabbert will need to have a strong camp and preseason to keep his backup job over much cheaper option Dylan Thompson, the undrafted free agent from South Carolina.

Because Briggs has not signed yet, a few things could be at play. First, given the roster numbers, Briggs might have options elsewhere to get more playing time with Bowman and Wilhoite already in place. And if the 49ers did sign Briggs, would he be willing to play special teams? The 49ers aren’t likely to have many (any?) reserves on the roster that don’t provide special teams value.

At this point, I would be surprised if Briggs chose the 49ers over other teams that offered more playing time. If he were to come to San Francisco, it might indicate a lack of confidence in Bowman’s knee.

The media has only been allowed to watch Hayne on the field once at a voluntary minicamp a few weeks back. The initial impression: he’s big, athletic and moves well. His teammates seem to agree, based on first impressions.

After talking to Australian media members, Hayne coming stateside to play football was a surprise. He was described to me as the LeBron James of Australian rugby, far and away the country’s biggest sports star.

It will be interesting to see how he deals with competing for a roster spot this summer compared with the stardom he was used to back home as a rugby player. Initially, his best bet is going to be returning kickoffs, where he can let his instincts take over and without having to worry about the complications of a playbook. But he will have to prove he can pass protect and learn the plays before getting any offensive snaps in the preseason.

Given the 49ers have two converted college safeties playing linebacker (Wilhoite and Moody), I asked Baalke after Tartt was drafted about a possible position switch. After all, Tartt is already listed at 221 pounds and wouldn’t likely have a problem gaining 15-20 pounds before the start of the season.

“No, he’s not a linebacker,” Baalke said. “Now, could he be in some of the dime looks and stuff? Possibly. As far as a down in and down out, no, he’s a safety.”

I think the 49ers are pretty secure with Bowman and Wilhoite being in the middle of the field in nickel situations. But having Tartt come in as the sixth defensive back in dime sets makes a lot of sense, particularly if teams try to spread San Francisco’s defense out with multiple-receiver sets to set up the running game (the Seahawks do this more than most). Tartt could also be used in goal-line situations.

Most of this draft class was selected with 2016 in mind, including Tartt, who appears earmarked to replace Antoine Bethea, who sees his salary jump to $4.5 and $5.25 million in 2016 and 2017.

If you consider Brandon Thomas a rookie after "red shirting" in 2014, he’s the easy answer. The starting left guard spot might be the team’s biggest question mark in terms of proven options after losing Iupati in free agency. Free-agent signee Erik Pears was Pro Football Focus’ 76th-ranked guard (of 78) in 2014, allowing 23 hurries and four sacks while struggling as a run blocker. Marcus Martin, who played center as a rookie, struggled there in 2014, but is also an option at left guard.

"Well (Thomas) was drafted for this in mind. It’s obvious why we drafted him," Baalke told me earlier this spring. "We were able to get him where we were (in the third round in 2014) because he was injured. We knew going into it was going to be a red-shirt year for him. He looks very good at this point. He’s come off the knee injury very well. He’s strong. He’s moving extremely well. He’s a very engaged guy. Very focused on what he needs to do and wants to do at this level. So we feel real good about him.”

Consider the brand of football the 49ers are going to play - run, run, run - in the physical NFC West. They can’t afford to have any weak links along the offensive line. They need Thomas to be very good, because he’s replacing a very good player in Iupati.

Otherwise, the other logical answer would Arik Armstead, should Justin Smith retire. But the 49ers won't need him as badly with Darnell Dockett, Quinton Dial and Tank Carradine vying for playing time in the crowded group along the defensive line.

@ChrisBiderman what do you think about running the jumbo nickel with Tartt playing down next to Bow?

Tartt could also be used in goal-line situations.

Most of this draft class was selected with 2016 in mind, including Tartt, who appears earmarked to replace Antoine Bethea, who sees his salary jump to $4.5 and $5.25 million in 2016 and 2017.

@ChrisBiderman which, if any, rookie needs to contribute from the start.

If you consider Brandon Thomas a rookie after \"red shirting\" in 2014, he’s the easy answer.

\"Well (Thomas) was drafted for this in mind. It’s obvious why we drafted him,\" Baalke told me earlier this spring. \"We were able to get him where we were (in the third round in 2014) because he was injured.
