SANTA CLARA, Calif. - San Francisco 49ers inside linebacker Michael Wilhoite, who is expected to start alongside NaVorro Bowman at inside linebacker, was placed on non-football injury list, head coach Jim Tomsula announced Friday.
Wilhote sustained a muscle strain in his leg, Tomsula said, but it does not appear serious. "We’re not going to rush him back. We’re going to make sure it’s taken care of. I don’t want that lingering," said Tomsula.
Wilhoite is slated to takeover Patrick Willis' job full time in 2015, following the All-Pro's retirement this offseason. Wilhoite spent last season as Bowman's replacement, starting in 16 games for the first time in his career, finishing third on the team with 75 tackles, including four for loss.
Fellow inside linebacker and special teams ace, Nick Bellore, who signed as a free agent from the New York Jets this spring, will also miss the start of training camp while dealing with an illness, Tomsula said.
Second-year outside linebacker Aaron Lynch, who led the 49ers with six sacks in 2014, was removed from the non-football injury list Friday and will available at the start of training camp Saturday. Lynch dealt with a hamstring injury that caused him to miss time during the offseason program in the spring.
