The 49ers got torched by Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers, particularly on third down. We break down those six big plays.

The Steelers did most of their damage on a series of big plays, most of which came on third down. We take a look at those plays to see what went wrong for the 49ers.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - In Sunday's ugly 43-18 loss in Pittsburgh, the 49ers' undoing was quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's ability to hit big plays down the field, particularly on third down.

Roethlisberger connected on six plays that went beyond 20 yards, amounting to 267 of his 369 passing yards for the day (72.35 percent, for you mathematicians). Five of those six plays came on third down.

Part of the problem, head coach Jim Tomsula said Monday, was the defense's emphasis to stop drives and get off the field. Schematically, that opened things up for the Steelers' to take their shots deep.

"We load the box, we crowd down, we give you a disguise and you’re third-and-two, you’re third-and-three, you’re third-and-four, are you going to throw a quick out? Are you going to run the ball?" Tomsula said. "So, we show and then we get out of there and a couple of those were cover two, the end result is cover two, which is the safety over the top there."

Safeties Eric Reid and Antoine Bethea started a few of those plays close to the line of scrimmage to show blitz and/or disguise coverage, leaving the back of the field open. The speed of Pittsburgh's receivers allowed them to get behind the safeties and make some of those plays, putting the cornerbacks in compromising situations.

Antonio Brown was the obvious difference maker, notching six catches and 120 yards against cornerback Kenneth Acker, according to Pro Football Focus, who was making his second career start. Brown plays faster than his 4.47 time in the 40-yard dash. Acker ran a 4.50 in his pro day leading up to the 2014 draft. But one misstep is all it takes to lose one of the game's best receivers down the field.

It didn't help that the 49ers were unable to muster any consistent pass rush, finishing with no sacks or QB hits. Roethlisberger was comfortable in the pocket, allowing him to make some excellent throws. Aaron Lynch and Arik Armstead were the only defenders to register a pressure, notching two each, according to PFF.

Let's take a look at each of those big plays.

Situation: Third and 10 from Pittsburgh's 20 (13:46 first quarter). Score: 0-0

This was the Steelers' first possession, and their first third-down play of the game following a false start. Reid started close to the line of scrimmage, showing blitz, or indicating to Roethlisberger he might be covering running back DeAngelo Williams. At the snap, Reid busted back to play the deep part of the field. Roethlisberger threw a perfect pass to Brown, who beat Acker, with Reid getting there a half-step too late. If Reid was playing the deep part of the field to start the play, would Roethlisberger have made this throw? The Steelers didn't end up scoring on this drive, but it was a sign of things to come.

Situation: Third and 5 from Pittsburgh's 22 (6:58 first quarter). Score: 0-0

Bethea was on the left side, giving help to Jaquiski Tartt, who was covering tight end Heath Miller. Cornerback Dontae Johnson stayed with Darrius Heyward-Bey, mostly because Heyward-Bey wasn't running at full speed to start his route. Johnson's coverage, overall, was good. But he didn't have help over the top with Bethea playing down and not getting back to the deep part of the field in time. It was a perfect throw from Roethlisberger, and led to Pittsburgh's first score of the game.

Situation: Third and 6 from Pittsburgh's 39 (8:31 second quarter). Score: Steelers 8, 49ers 3

Reid again came close to the line of scrimmage and broke deep once the ball was snapped. This time, it looks like he got back in time to cover Brown. But Reid took a bad angle and lost the ball and receiver at the same time. Brown probably would have walked into the end zone if the ball was thrown a touch further. Instead, Williams scored his first of three touchdowns on the very next play.

Situation: First and 10 from San Francisco's 35 (5:52 second quarter). Score: Steelers 16, 49ers 3

The 49ers just punted from deep in their own territory after Colin Kaepernick took a 17-yard sack by Ryan Shazier, with Brown returning the punt to the 35. Roethlisberger audibled at the line of scrimmage with a bunch formation to his right off the right tackle, and the 49ers didn't appear to make any checks to counter. Darrius Heyward-Bey streaked up the right seam, right past Bethea for an easy score on another well-thrown ball. Cornerback Tramaine Brock's responsibility appeared to be toward the left sideline in a zone on that bunched side. But the tight end stayed in pass protection and effectively kept Lynch away from Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger checked to the perfect play given the look, allowing Heyward-Bey to use his 4.3 speed against the 31-year-old Bethea. This made the score 22-3 after the missed extra point.

Situation: Third and 2 from Pittsburgh's 44 (11:50 fourth quarter). Score: Steelers 29, 49ers 10

Nickel corner Jimmie Ward began this play lined up against Markus Wheaton, put passed him off to linebacker Michael Wilhoite in order to pick up the running back out of the back field. The play looked like it was designed to go to Wheaton up the right seam, but the pocket broke down, allowing Roethlisberger to roll to his right, giving Wheaton more time to get down field with Wilhoite on him - an obvious mismatch. Wilhoite had the seam covered initially, but couldn't hold his coverage on Wheaton long enough to prevent the long completion. The Steelers scored two plays later on Williams' third touchdown of the day.

Situation: Third and 3 from Pittsburgh's 39 (8:31 fourth quarter). Score: Steelers 36, 49ers 18

The Steelers got themselves a free play here because Ahmad Brooks jumped offsides, allowing Brown to run a 9-route (streak) down the sideline against Brock, who didn't attempt to jam him at the line of scrimmage. Instead, Brock opened his hips, getting into a foot race with Brown, which he lost, leading to a 56-yard again. Brock didn't have any help over the top because Reid was playing the right flat, probably because the Steelers only needed three yards for the first down, continuing the theme of playing up to prevent moving the sticks on third down. Two plays later, Pittsburgh made it 43-18 with Brown's seven-yard touchdown grab. It was the last of Brown's nine catches for 195 yards.
